Laura Hughes’ Style Report
Executive Editor of Elite Traveler shares her personal style
By: Laura Hughes
I fly a lot, especially to fashion shows in Milan and Paris, and timepiece shows in Basle and Geneva. I am away up to ten days at any one time.

Before any trip, I take a piece of paper and write down the number of events I will be going to each day. Then I write in the exact outfit I will be wearing, clothes, shoes and other accessories (other busy women may be able to do mix-and-match but I feel happiest with a compete outfit for each occasion).
My suitcases are Samsonite Black Label. They really 'work'. They are incredibly strong and hold a lot.
I never travel hand-baggage only, even for the shortest trip. I cannot be bothered to put all my lotions, potions, gels and other air-security No Nos in small containers. I do carry spare contact lenses with me in the cabin. My carry-on bag is a 15-year old no-logo 'epi' Louis Vuitton tote bag, which holds the few things I need, plus my laptop and one copy of Elite Traveler, which weighs about two pounds. When traveling, I like Tod's shoes, A.G. jeans and at least a double layer of tops to be able to cope with the changing temperature of the plane cabin. My top designer overall would probably be Dolce & Gabbana.
Right now, in the photograph, I am wearing a Kiton black suit and white shirt, a two-time De Grisogono watch and an Etro bag. I like Ralph Lauren for business, too.
Weekends are a different matter. My ideal Saturday away-night would be The Peninsula Hong Kong, in one of its harbor-view corner bedrooms with such sexy bathtubs (you feel as if you are looking over the city). If I am home, my weekend gear might be a leather jacket and corduroy jeans.
My favorite toy right now is an XM satellite radio, the size of an iPod, which means I can get decent music, wherever. I like club dance when

I am off-duty, but I write listening to Mozart or other classics. My number one book remains Kazuo Ishiguro's The Remains of the Day, later made into the James Ivory and Ruth Prawer Jhabvala movie of the same name.
We have a gym in our Manhattan apartment block and I have a strict one-hour workout that I will follow every other day, at five o'clock in the morning if home or whenever it can be fitted in if I am on the road. The workout is divided into treadmill plus bike plus free weights. It never varies.
I try to avoid airline food but I can always fill up with Clif Builder's protein bars: I always carry a stack as they are great breakfast substitutes when, for instance, I am in Paris for the shows (yes, they sound glamorous but they are really hard work, with one show after another, many starting late, and solid traffic in between).
At home, we eat in, and simply, to compensate for the many business lunches that come with this job. Monday night, say, I might do popovers (Yorkshire puddings) and a green salad. We never drink alcohol at home, except at Thanksgiving or Christmas.
