Go fishing in Mongolia
Mongolia is a fly fisherman’s dream
By: Mike Fitzgerald Jr.
How about fishing in Mongolia, one of the few countries to retain its ancient traditions and culture? The fishing camps are set up on nice stretches of river in the remote outback of Mongolia and are a fly fisherman’s dream. Taimen is the main focus but Asian trout (called lenok, the oldest trout species in the world), Arctic grayling, and amur pike offer the angler plenty of variety.

Taimen is a fierce predator that Mongolians call river wolf. They can live to about 50 years and they have a strike that will take your breath away. Picture yourself casting a mouse fly across a wonderful riffle. As your fly skitters across the surface, you can feel yourself leaning into the cast in anticipation of the impending strike. Then, it happens. The water erupts with a colossal head and mouth that demolishes your fly. In 2005, the biggest fish caught measured 58 inches - it cleared the water seven times in front of our stunned anglers.
Our camps are located in north-central Mongolia in a region similar to Montana's Yellowstone River valley - but here the views are unobstructed by western development. The white ger tents of the local herdsmen dot a wide, fertile valley floor lush with thick summer grass and vibrant wildflowers. The mountains around the rivers are lined with unbroken stands of larch, birch, aspen and alder forests. Get there by helicopter from Ulaanbaatar, which is served by scheduled airlines from Beijing, Moscow, Osaka and Seoul.
We still have some spaces available for September 2006. There are four rods for the week beginning September 4th, three rods for the week of September 11th and two rods for the week of September 18th.

Oh and by the way if Mongolia does not appeal, how about fishing for Atlantic salmon on the Yokanga River in Siberia? That is how Bruno Tison, Chef of Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn in California, spent his last summer vacation - now he is already planning a trout expedition at Huka, in New Zealand.
