Visit Armenia
The undiscovered tourist destination has much to offer
By: James Tufenkian
We were all absolutely thrilled when, last December Travel+Leisure magazine gave the Tufenkian Foundation its Global Vision Award, recognizing the defence of the historical, cultural and ecological integrity of the traveler’s world.
Visit Armenia

When I finished law school back in the USA in 1986, I traveled to Tibet and dreamed that my own vision of design would find a perfect mate in the ancient, Zen-like allure of Tibetan carpets - this is how my company, Tufenkian Carpets, was born. Our latest collections include a range by Irish designer Clodagh, uniquely for us, and based on the marvellous geological colors of the Grand Canyon.

In 1993 I was able to expand my business to include my ancestral homeland, Armenia. I want as many real travelers as possible to come and share in its beautiful countryside - it is an undiscovered tourist destination. Let Tufenkian Tours give a unique opportunity to witness the Armenian countryside. Visit local craftsmen who reinstate the centuries-old crafts of carpet-making, carpet weaving, yarn spinning, knitting, lace making, iron working, stone carving, wine making, and more. Witness the success of humanitarian projects that help disadvantaged communities in Armenia to care about their youngest and elderly members: visit an orphanage, a sheep-farming enterprise, art classes for children, and a soup kitchen for the elderly. You can enjoy sightseeing, hiking, and other healthy activities. Visit the lakes, see carpets being handcrafted by Armenian weavers. You can enjoy the most scenic and memorable sites of Armenia - Ashtarak, Biurakan, Djermuk, Etchmiadzin, Giumri, Hamberd, Lori, Sevan, Sisian and more.

Tufenkian Hotels in Lori, Sevan and the capital, Yerevan, are all of the highest quality. I have made sure that each is located within a scenic village setting. We work the best Armenian architects, and fill rooms with valuable paintings, furniture (and, of course, handcrafted Tufenkian carpets throughout!). You have Sealy Crown Jewel beds and Frette linens, internet connectivity, central heating and air-conditioning and hot and cold water 24 hours a day.

Restaurants are deliberately designed as Armenian medieval dining rooms and they feature both Eastern Armenian and Western dishes using the freshest local ingredients - Armenian tomatoes are so famous for their taste, by the way, that the Ararat Park Hyatt flies them in daily from Yerevan.

I believe avidly that using economic development makes social change. Alongside the various Tufenkian acritivies, the Tufenkian Foundation, established in 1999, has helped to improve the quality of living in Armenia. Armenian Forests NGO increases the area of healthy forest coverage in the country and develops models of local reforestation and stewardship. Soldier's Mother organizes free classes for the kids of fallen or disabled war veterans. The Vanadzor Orphans Program has undertaken construction and renovation of an orphanage housing 120 youngsters. I invite you - to come to Armenia
