People all around the globe are celebrating the rescue of 33 miners in Chile today. The miners had been trapped underground for more than two months after their mine collapsed. That’s how long it took for the men to be rescued and returned to safety, and today they are all once again above ground. The miners were winched more than 600 meters to the surface through a narrow shaft, which took weeks to drill.
Chile’s President, Sebastian Pinera, has said that the people responsible for the unsafe conditions at the mine will not go unpunished. The government has footed most of the multi-million dollar bill for the rescue effort, with part of the total cost coming from private donations.
The photos of the rescue effort are extremely moving. Check out CNN’s photo gallery of the recent events.
