Fall in Love with Amalfi: The Perfect Couples Getaway

Monday, March 8th, 2010

My boyfriend and I had reached October 2009 and were in desperate need of a holiday. After some research and conversations with friends – we agreed upon Amalfi in Italy for our autumn adventure. Leaving a cold and grey London in the distance, we arrived in sunny, vibrant Naples and took the short hydrofoil journey from the mainland over to the beautiful island of Ischia.

mezzatorre-resort-spa

Mezzatorre Resort & Spa was our first port of call. The approach to the property was long and winding, through the woods, with the Mediterranean Sea to our right. We checked in and were shown straight to our room – a Classic Suite in the tower. We entered with a large old style key into an entrance hall with the bedroom straight opposite through sliding doors. To the left, the bathroom had a bath with views out over the pool and then the sea. To the right of the entrance was a very comfortable lounge/dressing room with a plush sofa, desk unit and TV. The bed was extremely comfortable and there were some fabulously oversized chairs around the table in a bay window. All of the interior was tastefully decorated in neutral colours and fabrics. The next morning – we received a call from the wonderful General Manager, Giovanni Sirabella, to invite us to their famous thermal spa. After an hour or so doing the circuit in the pool, including Kneipp therapy, I was led off for a delightful full body massage that literally sent me to sleep.

We were sad to leave Ischia, but we had a boat to catch that would take us to Capri – I had never been before and it is a place I had always dreamed of visiting. I wasn’t to be disappointed! We arrived at Marina Grande and picked up one of the famous Capri taxis – an elongated, open top Fiat.

villa-marina-capri

Not even three minutes later, we reached Villa Marina Capri Hotel & Spa – a very discreet property, hidden off the road behind slate walls. We were taken to the Kate Perry Suite – there are twenty one individually designed rooms, themed around writers and personalities who were famous in Capri in a bygone era. We walked into a hallway with a rich purple chaise longue, writing desk and flat screen TV; patio windows led out out on to a very large terrace with views over Marina Grande and the sea beyond. On the right, our bedroom was regal gold and purple, with a mini library and more doors onto the terrace with table, chairs and sun loungers. This hotel has a very homely feel, as it is compact, although the layout really works – they have a great outdoor winding footpath that leads from the lobby to the pool and terrace area and then to the extremely cute spa area and bar. And throughout the resort, there are great chill out areas – outdoors sofas with comfy cushions or the dreamy hammocks that were dotted about the gardens. The trendy General Manager, Gaetano, has certainly injected the cool factor into the hotel with funky music and décor throughout.

jk-place-capri

Approximately 30 seconds around the corner, lay the next stop on our journey – the amazing J.K. Place, Capri. I had heard good things about this hotel, so my expectations were high and I was not let down. What makes this property so special? It is literally a home from home (although I could only wish that my home was as stylish!) – all of the team here from Samuel the GM to the two Lorenzos – in the restaurant and the concierge – are so friendly, always calling us by our first names and one of the things I loved was that you never sign for anything – they remember you and add your gin and tonic, for example, to your final bill. Room 9 was downstairs and the balcony was set into the cliff side, meaning we had uninterrupted views over the marina and the bay of Capri. The room was stunning; nautically themed with navy and crème stripes and a huge bed that was so inviting. The pièce de résistance, though was the bathroom – not only were the views also great – the room had the largest bath tub I have ever seen! It took an hour to fill and when I added the beautiful J.K. bubble bath, I was in heaven – glass of Prosecco in hand, from the welcome bottle that we were gifted upon arrival, reading a book – I could have spent all night there. The food is also wonderful at J.K. Place, Capri – from breakfast on the terrace to lunch by the pool and romantic dinners in the dining room – if you are a foodie – this place is for you. The sense of generosity was everywhere here from complimentary wi-fi to soft drinks in the mini bar.

capri-palace-hotel-spa

After leaving J.K. Place, we took the long and breathtaking road, high around the mountain from Capri to AnaCapri to stay at Capri Palace Hotel & Spa; one of the most established hotels on the island. This place is super cool inside with a fabulous bar, housing intriguing art – definitely not to be missed if you are in the area. L’Olivo is their 2 Michelin starred restaurant which has rave reviews, but we fancied being beach side and so took advantage of the complimentary shuttle bus down to their new beach club; Il Riccio. This was heaven, next to the sea, drinking great wine and eating fresh fish and seafood. Above the restaurant is an über cool bathing deck – all white with double day beds, it is the perfect way to spend the afternoon in the sunshine. Whilst you are down here, I would definitely recommend a visit to the famous Grotto Azzura. These are the spectacular blue caves in the cliff side, where you take a little boat, rowed by a local guy down into the grotto – once inside this magical lair, you are serenaded by the rowers, whilst marveling at the impossibly blue water.

hotel-punta-tragara

Our final home in Capri would be Punta Tragara; we were met in the main square of Capri by a member of their team who guided us past all of the designer boutiques off the Piazza Grande and down the walkways that led to the hotel. The first thing that hits you when you arrive is The Faraglioni, an amazing block of three rocks, rising up out of the sea and are the main landmark of Capri. These are on the doorstep of Punta Tragara – not a bad start. We were then shown to the Penthouse Suite and the views from here were even better than from down below – it was jaw dropping! And from the huge terrace, we just lay mesmerized by possibly one of the most beautiful views that I have seen. The great thing about this hotel is the location; not only is it overlooking the famous landmark of Capri but also it is walking distance to world class designer shops that Capri has become so renowned for.

When the time arrived to leave Capri, I was depressed to say the least – although we had not seen it in the height of the season, I couldn’t help but feel we had been lucky to be able to explore the island without navigating crowds and jostling for position in some of the loveliest restaurants. The last place we were visiting was Ravello; on the Amalfi Coast – just another short ferry trip from Capri. We stopped off along the way in picturesque Positano to offload some passengers and then continued on our way, only to be entertained by a family of dolphins!

palazzo-sasso

Last stop Palazzo Sasso; a beautiful little gem, hidden down the winding streets of Ravello. Our room had phenomenal views over the bay of Ravello and although it rained during our time here, the relaxing bar area made up for this and we idled away the afternoon reading and sampling cocktails. Upon recommendation, we sampled their Michelin starred restaurant Rosselinni’s – the food was to die for and the sommelier was so knowledgeable it was a delight to learn from him.

When we woke up on the final morning, I had a heavy heart as we packed up to leave and take the flight back to normality from the paradise that we had found.

It’s official – I had fallen in love with Amalfi.

Get out of Edmonton Labour Day Weekend: Lake Louise and Jasper

Thursday, August 13th, 2009

Although Edmonton is a beautiful city in and of itself, resting in its scenic river valley with a thriving music and arts community, sometimes the best way to spend a long weekend is to get out of the city and get back to nature.

With both Lake Louise and Jasper close by it’s a perfect time to hit the highway and breathe the fresh mountain air.

grizzly-bearsJump in the car and head south west, in about 5 hours you will hit the fabulous Lake Louise. Lake Louise is one of the largest ski areas in North America – but you can still get a lot out of this uniquely beautiful area in the summer.

Be sure to bring your camera and take advantage of their fully enclosed gondola for some of the world’s greatest views of the Rockies. This ride is also the best in the world for seeing wild grizzly bears in their natural environment.

It’s also a great place to enjoy the unspoiled beauty of the summer and relax at some of the world’s best luxury mountain resorts.

Post Hotel & Spa:

Voted as the number one ski hotel in North America by Conde Nast, Post Hotel and Spa is a perfect long weekend getaway! Reward yourself at their Temple Mountain Spa which is inspired by nature and designed to envelop you in comfort offering personal custom treatments.

The Post Hotel and Spa was originally built in 1942 and resonates with the spirit of its colourful founder, Sir Norman Watson. Also home to a magnificent wine cellar, it has won the Wine Spectacular Grand Award for six consecutive years from 2002 – 2007. Their extensive list of wine is a perfect for  accompaniment for their four diamond winning distinguished restaurant which Gourmet Magazine has listed as the third best rustic retreat in the world!

This hotel is truly a gem in the heart of the Canadian Rockies.

Moraine Lake Lodge:

Nestled in the spectacular valley of Lake Louise, Moraine Lake Lodge is the ultimate romantic escape. The luxury lodge embraces the dramatic beauty of the surrounding area and is a sanctuary suited to meet all of your needs offering breathtaking views of the snow capped mountains and glacier-fed lake.  The lodge also offers complementary canoe rentals to enjoy Moraine Lake, the lodge’s inspiration.

Every room and cabin at the lodge has an outdoor deck complete with custom designed, hand crafted log furniture, giving guest true Rock Mountain comfort.

The Moraine Lake Lodge also offers spectacular dining with a unique and elegant menu showcasing the best cuisine from the region. Wine-lovers will also delight in their impressive wine cellar, including Canadian and American vintages.

Another great alternative to your long weekend getaway is Jasper. Only a three and a half hour drive from Edmonton, the town of Jasper is a beautiful area in nature, preserved under the aegis of Canada’s national park system. With a wide range of activities and wildlife to explore Jasper is perfect for the entire family.

The Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge:

Probably the most famous accommodation in Jasper, The Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge welcomes you to the Grand Canadian Lodge Experience. Enjoy homelike comforts and amenities surrounded by incredible views of majestic mountains and the emerald green Lac Beauvert.

Just in time for the Labour Day long weekend, The Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge is offering a special, “99 Ways to Play”. They are offering a $99 play credit per night to use towards anything you can charge in your room.

You can use this credit towards food and beverage, golf green fees and club rentals, the kid’s camp, onsite activities or towards their Insignia Salon & Spa just to name a few.

This is the summer to discover Jasper!

Some of New Zealand’s Finest Luxury Hotels

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

The George Hotel Christchurch

A crucial element of maintaining our collection of the world’s best luxury experiences means constantly reviewing and testing our hotels to ensure they are still meeting our standards. This is a costly and time rich activity which ensures we have our finger on the pulse of the luxury travel industry. As such our collection is constantly expanding in both directions. During our most recent trip to New Zealand we excluded five hotels and included one.

Philippe Kjellgren, President of Kiwi Collection and I headed to Christchurch to visit The George. The property is very well located, across from the lush North Hadley Park on the edge of the city. The building itself isn’t overly impressive but once you enter through the front doors a very stylish environment unfolds. The lobby has elegant couches for guests to relax, read newspapers or surf the internet. There is a bar-restaurant set up to enjoy quick snacks, coffee, tea or other refreshments. Their Italian Restaurant, Pescatore, is elegantly styled with views out toward the park and is considered one of the top dining experiences in Christchurch.

Otahuna Lodge ChristchurchThe new refurbished premium rooms are located on the fourth floor and are very well appointed. The other three floors are to be renovated this year.

Christchurch as a city isn’t overly exciting, in my books at least. It does have some charming architecture though, mainly found in the city centre. Interestingly enough, its main purpose for international travelers is access to the Antarctic!

We then headed to Otahuna Lodge roughly a 20 minute drive from the George. This property is the polar opposite situated in the countryside and is one of New Zealand’s most historical houses, built in 1895. The owners are a very well traveled and sophisticated couple from New York. I would highly recommend this property for intimate group gatherings or for a romantic weekend getaway. I particularly enjoy the fact they have their own organic vegetable garden.

Grasmere Lodge High Country Retreat New ZealandThe next hotel on our journey was the Grasmere Lodge High Country Retreat. The drive is spectacular and could easily be turned into a rally car circuit – lots of fun. The lodge itself is a nice four star experience. The staff are excellent and really passionate about guests and the beauty of their surroundings. The chef served an excellent duck confit prepared in front of a roaring fire on a rather chilly night in February.

I would recommend a stay of three nights and take advantage of activities such as fishing, hiking and horseback riding. Ask the co-owner Tom Butler to take you for a ride on top of the hill opposite the lodge so you can see the enormous mountains directly behind the property. Bring a camera.

Travelling in French Polynesia Never Gets More Luxurious

Monday, April 27th, 2009
Bora Bora Pearl Beach Resort and Spa

Tahiti deserves its legendary status as the ultimate honeymoon destination. The beauty of the vast variety of lush mountains rising out of the sea puts a spell on you. The fascinating atolls, with their incredible abundance of marine life and crystal clear water, make this place a dream come true. The ultimate way to enjoy this would probably be on a small private cruise ship, but we will have to leave that for next time! Instead we stayed at some of the best hotels in French Polynesia.

We just spent 15 precious days in some of the most beautiful corners of the planet. From space the earth would be nothing but blue looking down as the closest landmasses are 8+ hours away by jet (Australia, South and North America). The closest major islands are New Zealand and Hawaii, 5+ hours away. Tahiti and its surrounding atolls and islands stretch over a territory as large as Europe. The night sky is breathtakingly clear with a very detailed view of the Milky Way.

We spent our time equally between Bora Bora, Tikehau and Tahaa (4 days), each a totally unique experience. A boat ride to swim with and feed stingrays and black tip sharks by the pass of the Atoll is a “must-do” in Bora Bora. A three-meter lemon shark was in close range before I quickly got back into the boat. ASW members Sandy Ellacott and his wife, Hiti, are the people to know if you want to explore Bora Bora. They contacted me when they saw my itinerary on the Geolocator.

Bora Bora Pearl Beach Resort and SpaThe Pearl Beach Resort in Tikehau was our second stop, located an hour flight to the North in the Tuamotu Archipelago. This is an outpost and gives you the feeling of what Bora Bora must have been hundreds of years ago.

The marine life surrounding our overwater bungalow was like an aquarium filled with sharks swimming beneath us at dinner time. Officially these sharks are not carnivores, but we did succeed at feeding them pieces of chicken, meat and fish!

We consequently limited our swimming to the day time. We spent the days exploring the wild beaches and pristine lagoon. Pink sand dunes with fish everywhere in the turquoise waters. A complete Robinson Crusoe experience!

Pearl Beach is wild and rustic and I warmly recommend it and its sophisticated and fresh food cooked by brilliant chef Jerome. It is also the only hotel in Tikehau.

Le Taha'a Private Island and SpaLe Taha’a was our last stop. It is the only Relais et Chateaux in all of Polynesia and has the most exquisite location on the ridge of the Atoll. We had a beach villa with a different perspective and definitely more toddler friendly than being on the water. Le Taha’a probably had the most “exclusive” feel to it, accentuated by the fact that the global economic crisis and the low/”rainy” season (although sunny every day).

We left via the capital Papeete where we spent the week-end at the Intercontinental resort conveniently located a few km from the airport. Papeete is the largest city and port in the South Pacific and evokes images of a bygone era. It is far from idyllic but an interesting place to visit for a few days. The black sand beach by the Radisson should not be missed, with its direct access to the ocean.

We capped our epic journey yesterday with an “A Small World” drink with 40 fascinating Tahiti based members, followed by a dinner for ten of the country’s key people in the travel and leisure business, including ASW members Christian Vernaudon, President of Air Tahiti Nui and Laurent Bessou, President of the Pearl Beach hotel chain. They are both true pioneers in Tahiti having spent 30+ years running the country’s tourism industry.

Top Tips for Safe International Travel

Wednesday, September 17th, 2008

Traveling abroad can be an exciting undertaking and an invaluable experience packed with fond memories lasting a lifetime. Depending on the amount of time you will be in a foreign country, preparing for a trip overseas can take anywhere from a couple days to many months. Like many travelers, your primary thoughts probably consist of what clothing to pack, buying extra memory cards for your digital camera and figuring out if your cell phone will work in the country you’re going to be in.  Most importantly, you want to prepare as much as possible in advance to ensure a pleasant trip. After all, you’ll likely be in unfamiliar surroundings and amongst people that may not speak your language. Here are some valuable travel trips to help make sure your trip is everything you imagined and more!

DO safeguard your valuables when traveling to a foreign country. Use a fanny pack or something with a zipper, instead of an open pocket or purse. Before departure, alert your bank and credit card companies of dates and locations of travel. Pack as few credit cards as possible and keep a separate quick reference sheet with International numbers to report a theft. There are also services that will do this for you.

DO become conversationally proficient (if possible) or at least learn some key phrases and practice the local language before taking a trip to a foreign country. These days you don’t need costly books or software instruction programs. You can visit a site like www.livemocha.com to get free instruction and practice with native speakers through online chats.

DO make sure someone (friends or family) has a copy of your itinerary and appropriate contact details. Designate someone that you can check in with once you arrive and provide them with a general guideline on how often you will be checking in.

DO familiarize yourself with the local customs and laws – although you might only be a tourist, you are still responsible for following the laws of that country. The last thing you want to do is spend your valuable vacation time behind bars.

DO use the local currency. Find an easy formula for converting numbers in your head. www.xe.com has accurate and timely currency conversion rates.

DO map out destinations in advance. Ask your friends, family and colleagues for recommendations of safe places/areas to visit, as well as areas to avoid. If you’re taking a short trip, this will help to make sure you go everywhere you wanted to visit.

DON’T look like a tourist. Try to observe the styles of the locals, so you don’t become a target for people looking to prey on tourists. No need to purchase an entirely new wardrobe, but depending on your destination you may want to leave the Hawaiian shirt and beach shorts at home.

DO remember your humility and gratitude. Locals will be pleased to help you in a pinch if you smile and show your appreciation!
