Each year on March 17 one of the biggest celebrations of a Catholic Saint occurs; St. Patrick’s Day.

With the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games coming to a close this weekend, why not throw your own closing ceremonies party with a Gold Cocktail?

Gold Cocktail recipe:

-2  1/2 oz Vodka
-1 1/2 oz Malibu Coconut Rum
-1 tsp shredded coconut
- Coconut flakes (for garnish)
-Edible gold powder (available at bakery/cake decorating outlets)

First, coat the bottom of a martini glass with the edible gold powder. Combine the remaining ingredients into an ice filled martini shaker, shake well and strain. If you like, add a little more gold powder to deepen the color and sprinkle with coconut flakes.

As we mentioned earlier this week in our post on the Madeira flash floods, this island was hit by heavy storms on Saturday February 20th and caused some of the worst damage this island has seen in recent history.

For many people, the Island of Madeira off the coast of Portugal is a popular vacation destination because of its natural beauty, rich artistic heritage, beautiful people and delicious wine. And according to a recent statement made by Conceicão Estudante, regional secretary of tourism and transportation on Madeira:

“We want to assure people that Madeira is safe, that there are no problems at the hotels and that the usual tourist activities are resuming very quickly.  Of course it will take time to rebuild some of the infrastructure and that won’t happen overnight but there is absolutely no reason for people not to come.”

How to make your Eye of the Tiger Cocktail:

-1 oz Rum
-1 oz Coconut rum (Malibu)
-1 oz Cranberry juice
-1 oz Sugar syrup
-1 oz Orange juice
-1/2 oz Dark rum

Add ingredients (except dark rum) into a martini shaker full of ice and shake. Strain into an ice filled highball glass and top with dark rum. Garnish with an orange slice if you like.
