Mumbai is a big city. Home to more than 20 million people, it’s the commercial and creative capital of India. There’s a lot to see and experience here, including galleries, plenty of unique restaurants and some stunning hotels.

Travelers heading for Mumbai usually opt for the southern tip of the city, home to the Gateway of India and the iconic Taj Mahal Hotel, Palace Wing.

First opened in 1903, the Palace Wing is India’s most renowned and beloved hotel. It has hosted notable guests such as Jackie Kennedy Onassis, Bill Clinton, English royals, The Beatles, Mick Jagger and Deep Purple. The Obamas recently stayed here.

The hotel became center stage of the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks; scenes of flames shooting out its windows were beamed around the world. Completely rebuilt and reopened in August 2010, the hotel has lived to see another generation of visiting heads of states, celebrities and weddings.

I recently visited the property, staying in a suite overlooking the Gateway of India.

The stairwells and detailing of this historic hotel have been restored to their former glory.

There are tributes to well-known guests who have stayed over the years.

The main pool offers a sanctuary from the noise and chaos outside.
