Check-in: The Fairmont Empress

- Joy Pecknold, Passport blog editor

The world loves new things (hello iPad 2, iPhone 4S, et. al.), but sometimes old is just as good, if not better. I got that feeling when I checked into The Fairmont Empress, a 103-year-old grand dame on Vancouver Island.

Situated right on the harbour in Victoria, B.C., next to the provincial capital’s pretty parliament building, my Fairmont Gold room gave me a golden view of the water.

It’s been recently refurbished too, so while the suite still pays homage to the rest of the hotel’s classic styling, it’s freshened up to look less tired. Sort of like the slightest, best kind of facelift where it isn’t obvious you had work done. And the bed. Whoa. The bed, and the pillows. It’s like sleeping inside a cloud on top of a cloud surrounded by clouds.
