The Regent Beijing is the Perfect Base for Sightseeing in Beijing

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

If you’re visiting Beijing this year, you will definitely want to be close to some of the city’s most famous sights and shops. For visitors who want to be right in the thick of things, The Regent Beijing Hotel is one of the best places to stay.

Think of being mere minutes away from the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square and Wangfujing Shopping – “location” is one of the many reasons why visitors will want to stay at the Regent Beijing Hotel, found in the city’s historical center.

This gorgeous 500-room hotel is new to our collection, so we’re excited to share it with all of our readers who are planning on traveling to China this year!

Guest rooms at the Regent Beijing are of a contemporary design. We really like the simplicity here, which gives guests a totally unpretentious and modern atmosphere. If you want an excellent view, be sure to ask for a room that overlooks the Forbidden City. (We think that view is a true sightseer’s dream).

And speaking of sightseeing – you can enjoy the view into your very own room from the washroom, which has a fun glass wall that looks out into the bedroom.

Nothing makes or breaks a stay like a good wash – and with a luxurious tub and separate shower, guests can enjoy their bathing method of choice to rinse away the day’s stress. We also enjoy the plush bath robes and bath products available to guests in each room.

If service and VIP treatment are important elements of your hotel stay, then you won’t be disappointed at this Beijing luxury hotel.

The staff here pride themselves on their attentive and personalized service. And, guests who book either the Executive Room or Executive Suites receive some additional value during their stays such as: express check-in and check-out, daily evening cocktails (from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.), complimentary internet access, complimentary pressing of one suit, butler service and more.

Luxury Hotels in Beijing - the RegentGuests who are health conscious can make use of the hotel’s Fitness Center during their stay, as well as the indoor swimming pools (one 216 square meter adult pool and a 15 square meter kid’s pool).

The hotel also has a spa, called “Serenity Spa”, which is one of Beijing’s finest. Relax, de-stress and re-energize here either by yourself, with your partner or with your friends.

You’ll find lots of treatment options available to keep you feeling fresh and beautiful.

The Regent Beijing also provides quite a few dining options as it features five restaurants and lounges. You can get a bit of a taste of home here since a wide variety of international cuisine is served in addition to traditional Chinese meals.

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

The Madinat Jumeirah Resort in Dubai pays tribute to Dubai’s heritage in that it resembles an ancient Arabian citadel. It’s the epitome of luxury at 874 rooms and suites. Think of tanning on 2 km of private Arabian beach, taking a relaxing boat ride through the resort’s waterways, and enjoying breathtaking views over an evening cocktail.

Lech am Arlberg in Austria is a True Skiers Paradise

Monday, September 28th, 2009

Unlike many other renowned Alpine resorts that are jam-packed with luxury hotels, Lech am Arlberg is a town for skiers, albeit those with lots of money, and its ski credentials are superb.

Not only does it host one of the oldest and most renowned ski clubs in the world, but it’s an integral part of a vast, interlinked ski area including St. Anton, Zurs and St. Christoph, and is simply stunning. It is also home to a number of world and Olympic-class ski champions including the famous Othmar Schneider whose medals add a touch of authenticity to my favourite hotel in Lech, the Kristiania.

Kristiania Lech sits at the head of the village, a 10-minute walk in ski boots from the lifts, and is owned and managed by Othmar’s daughter Gertrud, a wonderful ambassador for Alpine tradition who has created an intimate, quirky hotel that offers unbeatable personal service. I had the pleasure of four days at the Kristiania last Easter and was blessed with a week’s worth of fresh snowfall and startling blue skies.

Kristiania Lech in AustriaMy room lorded over the traditional village and its snow-covered rooftops, but had an African theme with warm, earthy tones and animal prints. No two of the cosy 29 rooms at the hotel are alike so there is a style to suit everyone from traditional Alpine chalet to Marie-Antoinette-inspired elegance.

Corridors are peppered with cushions and Moroccan lanterns, the candlelit bar is rich in colours and textures and the lounge chairs on the outside terrace are draped with blankets at night and thick duvets during the day for mountain gazing.

The Kristiania is part of Small Luxury Hotels and was awarded ‘Best Hotel of the World’ this year by the affiliation which didn’t surprise me given its personality – defined both by the team and the huge collection of contemporary art that Gertrud loves to display and change with the seasons – and its attention to detail.

Kristiania LechI won’t give the game away because it’s a voyage of discovery but don’t miss the amber candles burning in the downstairs cloakrooms, the truffle honey drizzled over cheese at dinner, the local Gruner Veltliner wine and the treasure chests in each room.

The hotel works on a half-board basis which I usually find restrictive but, in this case, was a blessing as the food is excellent and the multi-course menu changes every night.

Lech am Arlberg is within 200km of four airports including Innsbruck and Zurich, and we loved the comfort and service provided by VIP chauffeurs ‘Arlberg Exclusive’ who cater to both commercial and private jet passengers.

Best of the Best Design? Check out the SLS Hotel Beverly Hills, Designed by Philippe Starck

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

We’re pleased to learn that SLS Hotel in Beverly Hills was just awarded the “best achievement in design” by VIRTUOSO Life Magazine – an award winning luxury travel publication – for their “best of the best awards”.

SLS Hotel Beverly Hills is the epitome of sophistication, which makes it a true fit for VIRTUOSO’s design award, and an exciting place to stay for any lover of cutting edge interior design (and fans of the brilliant French designer Philippe Starck).

This luxury hotel in Los Angeles is the product of a huge renovation of the former Le Meridien at Beverly Hills, and opened last October.

The first design element that makes the SLS Beverly Hills stand apart is its two lobbies. The Private Guest Lobby is the perfect spot for a quick business meeting or a meet up with your friends in L.A. You can spend a bit of time at the restaurant or book one of the three private rooms for a dinner or small get together.

The second lobby, called The Bazaar, is just like a lively marketplace. You’ll find yourself lost in an intimate collection of rooms and spaces (all designed by Philippe Starck), perfect for dining, enjoying a glass of wine, socializing and shopping.

Guest Room at the SLS Hotel in Beverly HillsYou’ll find even more of Starck’s work in the guest rooms at the SLS where his gorgeous furnishings really add the touches needed to give each of the 297 rooms a chic and stunning atmosphere. Rooms are also extremely health conscious, with 32 allergen-resistant Pure rooms for guests that suffer from asthma and allergies.

Rooms are softly lit and guests will love the D. Porthault linens, pillow-top mattresses and MP3 connected sound systems.

Starck will continue to be quite busy with SLS Hotels in the future. He has an exclusive contract with Sam Nazarian (CEO of SBE and owner of the SLS Hotel brand), to design all future SLS hotels up until 2022! That will make Starck 73 when he finishes his contract.

Wow.

Three words for Mr. Starck: Way to go!

Check out some photos of the SLS Hotel at Beverly Hills below and let us know what you think of Starck’s work on this hotel!

If Blackbeard was a Luxury Traveler, Where Would he Spend his Shillings?

Blackbeard's Favourite Hotels in the Caribbean

Where would Blackbeard stay?

It’s a question that pops into all of our minds here at Kiwi Collection on “talk like a pirate day”.

We follow our favorite buccaneer of yesteryear, Blackbeard, on his route of war mongering and piracy, imagining where he would spend his gold shillings today after a long stretch at sea on the Queen Anne Revenge.

Half Moon Resort in Jamaica:

Before Blackbeard had any whiskers, he spent some time with his dad (also a British sailor) in Jamaica during the War of the Grand Alliance. Discussing wind speed, hurricanes and bowlines, it would have been quite normal for the then 8-year-old Edward Teach (later known as Blackbeard) to be swinging back goblets of more-rum-than-juice, learning all about the Caribbean from his father.

And what better place is there for some father-son bonding than Half Moon Resort? Located in the northern part of Jamaica, this resort is known for its family-friendly atmosphere.

Teach Senior and Teach Junior could have engaged in some rounds of golf at the Robert Trent Jones Sr. designed golf course, or enjoyed some shark-free time in one of the resort’s 51 swimming pools.

We’re pretty convinced that you won’t be able to get your eight-year-old a mug o’ rum at Half Moon Resort these days (social norms can be a bummer). But swimming with the dolphins? Horeseback ridding? These are but a few of the activities that keep guests amused at this gorgeous luxury resort today.

Sivory Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic:

Blackbeard didn’t learn all of his skills from his father, though. He had to figure out how to fight and sail on his own, crewing on a British warship during the War of the Spanish Succession. During the war, he spent lots of time in the Spanish West Indies, including the Dominican Republic.

It’s a little known fact, but Blackbeard really liked his food and wine (he wasn’t your average pirate).  So we figure during shore leave, Blackbeard would have spent some time at one of the DR’s most foodie-friendly resorts, Sivory Punta Cana.

Stocked with more than 8,000 bottles of the world’s finest wines, a lover of fine vino will find it impossible not to relax at this peaceful beach resort. And, with three restaurants to choose from (Laveranda Restaurant featuring Mediterranean cuisine, Gourmond Restaurant featuring French cuisine and Tau Restaurant featuring masterpieces for lovers of Asian fusion cuisine), you can really indulge after many a lean day at sea.

Some other Blackbeard approved hideouts in the Dominican Republic would be:

Sanctuary Cap Cana Golf and Spa Hotel

Casa Colonial Beach and Spa

Tortuga Bay at Puntacana Resort and Club

Charleston South Carolina: the Beard Gets Blacker

Unfortunately, all good things come to an end. In the case of Blackbeard, this included fighting in the War of the Spanish Succession, which kept him far too busy to take up plundering.

So, when the Brits pulled out of the war in 1713, he turned to a life of crime by singing up as crew on Pirate Benjamin Hornigold’s ship. Blackbeard was later elected Captain, renamed the ship the Queen Anne Revenge (yikes!) and he spent his days looting other boats for booze, money and guns.

Where did he commit the ultimate in looting? Charleston, South Carolina, of course.

This is where Blackbeard staged the famous Blockade of Charleston where he plundered five freighters and stopped any other ship from entering or leaving the harbor.

The Blockade of Charleston was certainly the highlight of Blackbeard’s career, and even for a quick holiday, he wouldn’t take his keen eye off of his pet project. So, we figure that Blackbeard would have chosen a nice resort right on the beach, like The Village at Wild Dunes, where he could keep one glass eye fixed on his business venture while enjoying a few mojitos.

This coastal resort has 120 rooms and suites – perfect for four ships worth of crew with varying interests. You can pretty much do as much or as little as you like at Wild Dunes, which makes it an attractive getaway for all types of travelers.

And, of course, for those who lead an active lifestyle (looting, plundering and swinging on ropes), no vacation is complete without a trip to the spa and fitness center.

Luckily, you can create your own “fitness retreat” including everything from yoga and other exercises to spa treatments, perfect for melting away a long day of gun wielding.

The Andaz West Hollywood: Angelina’s Favourite L.A. Hotel

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

Angelina Jolin is a fashion stylist for ELLE, Vogue, GQ, and Maxim Magazines. Her work takes her to all kinds of exciting places around the world and, most recently, to L.A. where she stayed at the Andaz West Hollywood, now one of her favorite haunts in the city of Angles.

I have stayed at most hotels in Los Angeles throughout my years as a stylist. But, by far my newest favorite is The Andaz-West Hollywood.

You might have heard of this hotel as The Rolling Stones along with Led Zeppelin’s Robert Plant and the Who’s Keith Moon made it famous through their wild parties and by tossing a TV set out one of the windows here!

No TV’s were harmed during the duration of my stay, but one thing is for sure – if celebrity spotting is your thing, the Andaz is the place to be! This hotel is located on the famous Sunset Strip, and it is walking distance to some of L.A.’s best shopping and lots of great cafes. This is where the rich and famous hang out.

What did I like about the Andaz? The simplicity and personal service at this great hotel in L.A. makes it super unpretentious. Coffee, tea and mini viennoiseries are served complimentary each morning in the lobby.

During the day there is fruit and See’s chocolate, and at sunset, some local wines for guests to try!

The rooms are comfortable and spacious and complimentary non-alcoholic drinks and snacks are included, which is always a nice touch.

This room makes you want to cancel all your plans and just stay in…and that, for me, makes it a great hotel!

Andaz West Hollywood in L.A.I really ate well during my stay here as well! French top chef, Sebastien Archambault, has totally succeeded with an innovative menu consisting mostly of foods made with local produce.

One of my favorite meals was American foie gras paired with an incredible American wine. There are actually many great wines from the U.S. served at the hotel’s restaurant and it’s great, when you’re traveling, to eat and drink locally produced foods and wines.

Through room service you can order in scrumptious food if you want – perfect after a long flight (I had one of their salads).

The top floor has a nice pool with a fantastic view. You can stay very healthy if you hang out up there during your stay – they serve fresh carrot juice with ginger if you ask for it!

I’m really familiar with L.A. since my work takes me there often, so here are some tips for how to spend some of your time the next time you visit the city and stay close to the Sunset Strip:

Monday, September 14th, 2009

If you’re planning a holiday this winter but have no idea where to go, consider all of the buzz around New Zealand and, specifically, Blanket Bay Lodge. Travel writers, industry experts and discerning travellers have spoken – Blanket Bay Lodge in New Zealand, and New Zealand itself as a destination in general, really cleaned up and won a wide array of travel and tourism awards this year.

Lodge at Blanket Bay is a tiny boutique hotel right on Lake Wakatipu. Built out of native New Zealand timber and stone, guests feel close to nature in this rustic setting.

Guests here stay in gorgeous lakeside rooms or suites, decorated with high end furnishings and plush rugs. Of course, since the lodge is going for a nature-inspired atmosphere, most of the materials used in the rooms are completely natural.

Room in Blanket Bay LodgeBlanket Bay’s best attributes include its stunning views of the mountains and the lake and its culinary excellence. Guests who enjoy fine food and wine and fabulous views will really love this retreat.

Not surprisingly, Blanket Bay won some of the travel industries top awards this year. For example, the Lodge was named “New Zealand’s Best Regional Property” at the HM Awards 2009 (Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Island’s only regional benchmark for excellence in hospitality management).

In addition, it was named the best leisure hotel in Australasia and the South Pacific in the Conde Nast Traveller Readers’ Travel Awards 2009.

“Our location in one of the most spectacular places in New Zealand combined with the unforgettable experience we work to produce for each and every one of our guests has been recognized by Conde Nast readers. We have a superb kitchen run by a talented team of award winning chefs to produce the very best in gourmet dining. We are just delighted to have the work of each and every member of our staff recognized in this way,” said Blanket Bay Manager Philip Jenkins.

New Zealand LandscapeNew Zealand as a destination also topped the travel industry’s awards this year. New Zealand was named one of the top five favourite countries by Conde Nast readers for the sixth year in a row this September.

Sarah Miller, Editor Conde Nast Traveller, said New Zealand was popular with readers because of its fantastic landscape and its relaxed quality of life.

“New Zealand is also known for its fantastic food, its Maori culture, and for being one of the safest places on the planet. Of course, it’s also thought of as being forward-thinking for its environmental friendliness. And all that stuff adds up,” she said.

New Zealand was also listed fourth overall in the ‘Best of the Best’ section of the awards which includes cities, airports, hotels, cruise lines and other sectors within the tourism industry.
