Destination Dispatches: The Princess Diaries

- Amy Chan, Director of Marketing at Kiwi Collection, Huffington Post blogger and 24 Hours Newspaper columnist

On the eve of the Royal Wedding, it became clear that my invite must have mistakenly been sent to some other Amy Chan. Rather than wallow in guest list longing, I decided to take matters into my own hands.

Off to Shangri-La Vancouver I went in search of my own princess pampering.

After a smooth check-in at the back of the hotel (perfect for dodging paparazzi), I headed to my beautiful deluxe room on the 15th floor. To my pleasant surprise, a sparkling tiara awaited me on my bed pillow, along with a plate of fresh chocolate-dipped strawberries. Let the pampering begin.

The royal treatment at Shangri-La Vancouver consists of a sweet amuse-bouche.

I wandered over to MARKET, the Jean Georges restaurant within the hotel and indulged in a burger fit for a royal: one dressed in black truffle and brie. Delish, I do say.

Then it was off to bedington I went. What happened after my 2 a.m. wake up call is somewhat of a sleepy haze, so I’ll recount the events as per my live tweeting records:

3:03 a.m.: Spotted: @erin_ireland: @jill_killeen @searching4style @christie_lohr @catherinebarr in pjs & tiaras at @shangrila_van #Royal #slumberparty

Christine Lohr, Erin Ireland and other guests in their finest tiaras having tea and scones before the live viewing of the Royal Wedding.

3:05 a.m.: RT @Queen_UK Sent a Rolls Royce over to pick up Catherine. Anyone throwing paint at it will spend eternity in the Tower of London, one can assure you.

3:07 a.m.: What a graceful and beautiful princess! Alexander McQueen wedding dress is stunning. Loving the full sleeves.

3:15 a.m.: “Love those who love you” ~ Voltaire #royalwedding

3:17 a.m.: LOL. RT @paulscheer Glad to see Lady Gaga donated her headpieces to all the female attendees #royalwedding

3:28 a.m.: Le sigh. RT @gailmcinnes: Apparently what Harry said to William when Kate was approaching – with a grin: “wait til you see her.”

3:33 a.m.: Prince William – one lucky duke.

6:15 a.m.: RT @Queen_UK Approximately 3/4 full of gin, 1/4 full of wedding cake and 100% full of happiness. God Save One.

6:22 a.m.: RT @Queen_UK Bidding for Prince Harry opens at 4pm.

Tuning into the Royal Wedding with other princesses in Shangri-La Vancouver’s theatre.

Spoof Twitter accounts and jokes aside, I have to admit, before attending this party I wasn’t paying much attention to all the royal wedding hype. But after seeing Kate Middleton so beautifully and gracefully poised, I couldn’t help but feel emotional. This woman, once called a “commoner,” will have much of her life scripted with millions watching her every move. And so far she’s played the role without a hitch. Well, just one hitch. Getting hitched.

This sounds so fun! Who needs to fly to London for some royal treatment =)

  2. Tim Moore says:

When Harry ties the knot one day, instead of my wife waking me up in the middle of the night to watch the wedding, I’ll send her to the Shangri-La. Or better yet, I’ll get the boys over there for a beer and sports night and she can watch it on the tube at home! Can you tell I’m still catching up on my sleep?

  3. Lisa says:

Love the tiaras. What a nice touch.

  4. Abril says:
