Unless they’re from former Liberian president Charles Taylor, that is. If supermodel Naomi Campbell had been told this years ago, she would probably be very grateful right about now.
War crimes prosecutors in The Hague want Ms Campbell to be subpoenaed to testify at the trial of Charles Taylor, Liberia’s ex-President.
This, of course, is the same Charles Taylor who is accused of selling diamonds and buying weapons for Sierra Leone’s Revolutionary United Front (RUF) rebels. He is accused of 11 counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity that took place during the brutal civil war that lasted from 1991-2001.
Well, apparently Mr. Taylor gave the supermodel “rough diamonds” as a gift in 1997 at Nelson Mandela’s house.
Mia Farrow, who also might be required to testify, remembers being told the next morning by her girlfriend, Naomi Campbell, about the “huge” uncut diamond she received.
Anyone who has seen the movie Blood Diamond knows what a hot-button issue the procurement, sale, and use of “blood diamonds” is. After this news, perhaps Ms. Campbell knows it better than anyone else.
