The newest book gone blockbuster; Eat Pray Love is a true story about a woman’s journey across the world, where finding herself is the final destination.
I think the main reason this movie is so inspiring is because deep down we all have that feeling of wanting to let go, self indulge and take the time to really figure out, who am I? In Eat Pray Love, Liz (the main character) embarks on a year long search for everything taking her to Italy (eat), India (pray) and Indonesia (love).
The quest for self discovery is nothing new, and transformation can happen anywhere in the world, which makes it easy to plan your own adventure. One of the best pieces of advice I ever got from my mother was “if you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always go where you’ve always been” so be bold when planning your journey and don’t be afraid to try something new. I think the key to doing something like this is to simply take yourself out of your comfort zone, take a deep breath and allow yourself to actually live your life; the rest should just happen naturally.
If you are about to embark on your own adventure remember, personal growth isn’t confined to one area on earth, it all happens within yourself. But if you feel like leaving it all behind and taking a break, here are my suggestions to inspire you.
Mexico: When I think of eating and enjoying life, Mexico is always the first place that comes to mind, especially Oaxaca, the heart of Mexican cuisine. Mexican food is more than just tacos, its cuisine is truly a labor of love, diverse and rich in tradition and history. If you have a taste for adventure, you will be rewarded in Mexico.
Japan: With the appreciation for simple, natural tastes, Tokyo, is a wonderful place to re-discover an appreciation for food and trying something a little different. Japanese cuisine has been developed over centuries is known for its emphasis on the seasonality of its ingredients which is sure to awaken your taste buds.
Canada: Nothing gives me more sense of peace, well being and clarity of mind then nature, and this country has an abundance of it. A trip out to Vancouver is a perfect place to embark on a spiritual journey. I’d suggest taking short ferry north of the City to Bowen Island’s Xenia Center, which is perfect if you seek stillness. This center has a meditation house and labyrinth in the middle of the forest that is open to the public.
Hawaii: In Eat Pray Love, Liz visits an ashram in India, and these types of places can be found all over the world if you are looking for a place to live and meditate in exchange for karma work. But if that’s not your cup of green tea then a trip to one of Hawaii’s islands might be the next best thing. Sunshine, the ocean, fresh air and beautiful people are sure to help you feel connected to yourself, nature, the world and the universe.
Netherlands: Amsterdam was the city where I found the man of my dreams, and fell madly in love. This city is known for its atmosphere of freedom and tolerance which is the perfect concoction to let your heart explode. The city has a romantic setting with its old canals, bicycles, beautiful colors, amazing art and countless secret spots to have some alone time.
Russia: Depending on the time of year you decide to visit, St. Petersburg is known for begin one of the most romantic cities on earth especially during their White Nights when the sun doesn’t descend below the horizon giving sunsets a whole new meaning. Or cozy up and get comfy during their beautiful winters. Whenever you visit, be sure to take a boat tour along the Neva River admiring the cities open bridges and stunning architecture.
