Emma Crosby Reporting Live From The Taj, Capetown

- Emma Crosby, one of the top TV personalities in the United Kingdom. Currently anchor for Channel Five News.

Sunny greetings from South Africa! I checked into The Taj this morning, and it’s such a great hotel to get over the 11-hour flight to Cape Town. I was in my room by 10:30am having landed only a couple of hours before. And, after a long and hectic journey, I can’t tell you how nice it is to jump straight into the super king bed with beautiful crisp white sheets and plump pillows. Dozing off and stretching out with the spectacular view of Table Mountain from my bedroom window… Absolute bliss!

Mountain views from the presidential suite bathroom

The Taj is also in a great location, set in two adjoining old bank builds right bang slap in the middle of Cape Town’s Historic city centre. Even though I’ve visited many times before, this is an area I’m not familiar with. Like many tourists I usually head to the beaches and the V and A Waterfront. But what an incredible area!

Right opposite The Taj is St George’s Cathedral, on the right is the beautiful St George’s Mall where there are many European style pavement bars and cafes. Colonial style Parliament buildings are just to the left, and so is the beautifully renovated Apartheid Museum. And, if you fancy a garden stroll, then Company Gardens is right opposite too.

This is where the Dutch East India Company grew fruit and vegetables for the ship trade heading from Europe to India. The Taj’s very friendly General Manager Michael Pownall tells me this is pretty much the birth place of Cape Town.

Come to The Taj if you want a different perspective of Cape Town, and in such an accessible city the beach and waterfront are only a short cab drive away any way. Talking of cars, I’ve already become very friendly with the hotel’s courtesy car drivers who run an excellent service. In a top of the range Jaguar and Range Rover they’ve driven me hither and thither, even waiting patiently when I gave him completely wrong address to pick me up from a friend’s party.

And at the hotel’s spa I’ve had a two hour pedicure, the longest and most relaxing pedicure of my life!  In fact, it was so relaxing that I slept through most of it, only to wake up to pretty polished pink toes.

The only thing I’m going to have to get used to is the glass wall between the bathroom and the bedroom. Great for looking at Table Mountain whilst wallowing in the bath…but for other activities not so practical!

WOW. Can I get a view like that please? Thanks for this article Emma. I’m a big fan of yours and it’s very cool to see the places you like to visit and how you spend your down time.

I’ll take your word for it – Taj Capetown is on my bucket list!

Wow, I wonder how it would be like to experience the slavery museum, I’d imagine it would be quite intense.

I’ve experienced a few hotels in Europe where the shower is divided only by a completely transparent glass. Its definitely tricky when you’re traveling with friends and wanting some privacy!

  4. Emma – Thanks for sharing your experience.

amyfabulous: I believe you also meant apartheid museum, and not the slavery – two separate human right injustices. Cape Town has the famous Robben Island Museum which imprisoned apartheid freedom fighters such as Nelson Mandela. The island also served as a place of banishment, isolation and imprisonment during the 17th century.
