Fresh Picks: Viceroy Maldives

- Joy Pecknold, Passport blog editor

“Fresh Picks” features the latest luxury properties admitted into the Kiwi Collection. This week, we take a peek inside Viceroy Maldives, a brand new luxury property opening April 2012.

Where: Utopia. More specifically, on the Maldives’ northern edge, an hour from Malé on the private island of Vagaru. There, some 17 acres of palm trees and sand surround a blue lagoon.

What: The 61 villas, 32 over the water and 29 on the beach, resemble an inverted Maldivian “dhoni” (a traditional fishing boat) hull, with crisp, calm interiors by Toronto designer Yabu Pushelberg. All have utmost privacy in mind. The crème de la crème? A three-bedroom Royal Villa, the largest of its kind in the Maldives, with a living room of floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the lagoon, 60 square meter plunge pool just steps from the water, dining room, fully stocked bar, and a game room with a champion-sized pool table. It’s also set to have a world-class spa and five dining experiences to choose from.

Who: Those who seek style, substance and seclusion in equal heaping measure.

Why: While you liked having a bit of snow over the holiday season, come April you’ll be right sick of it. Bring on the blue lagoon (Brooke Shields not included).
