Hailey’s advice: when in Orange County, stay at the St. Regis

- Hailey Taylor,

Heading to Southern California anytime soon? Make the St. Regis Monarch Beach Resort your home base.

Located in stunning Dana Point, this 172-acre resort is California’s only Forbes Five-Star resort and AAA Five-Diamond resort. Boasting Tuscan-inspired architecture and incredible ocean views, this property provides a feast for eyes and stomach alike.

Perfection is in the air here and it’s evident in every gorgeous detail. Our suite featured custom-designed furniture, wood shutters, and an all-marble bathroom complete with dual vanities, a separate two-person shower and an over-sized soaking tub. The private balcony had sparkling views, and the bed’s goose down comforter, silky 300-thread count sheets, and perfect view of a fabulous Sony Vega flat screen television was enough to make me want to stay inside for as long as possible…

But there was just too much to do. 30,000 square feet of pure bliss pretty much sums up Spa Gaucin – complete with all kinds of award winning treatments and services. Not that I stopped there. There was still a pool or two to check out, yoga classes to take, a fabulous fitness center to try out, an 18-hole Robert Trent Jones Jr. golf course, and last but not least, the St. Regis Beach Club.

The hotel offers complimentary shuttle service to the Beach Club at a 2-mile-long beach, where attendants are always on hand to set up your chair and umbrella. If the surf is good, by the way, you might want to consider hiring one of the “surf butlers.” They’ll get you all set for a memorable day in the water.

If you can find time between activities, be sure to dine at one of the six ocean front restaurants. My personal favorite was the exclusive Monarch Bay Club restaurant. Go at sunset and stay a while. It’s the perfect place to enjoy a drink.

If you are looking to explore the surrounding area a little, nearby Laguna Beach is full of beauty and good taste.

Hungry for something outside of the hotel? La Sirena Grill is a unique organic Mexican Grill – a well-kept local secret where you’ll find Mexican fusion as opposed to classic Mexican fare. Try the porcini and truffle quesadilla, the chicken tortilla soup or the Baja-style fish tacos with zesty sauce. If you tend to steer clear of Mexican fare, and are on the hunt for a great wine list, delicious seafood, and friendly staff, head to 230 Forest Avenue Restaurant & Martini Bar. You won’t be disappointed.

Feeling adventurous? Crystal Cove State Park boasts 3.2 miles of beach and 2,400 acres of undeveloped woodland – popular for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding. The offshore waters are even designated as an underwater park, perfect for scuba diving and snorkeling. The beach here is popular with swimmers and surfers, but honestly, you can’t go wrong with any of the beaches in this area. They are all stunning.

Like to shop? While we’re on the topic of beaches, Tuvalu is a lovely Laguna Beach shop filled with all things “beachy.” Beach accessories, home décor, furniture – you name it. Both Laguna Beach and Dana Point are full of boutiques and eclectic shops that will definitely satisfy your urge to shop. If you are looking for a full-on shopping experience however, head north to Fashion Island – Orange County’s premier coastal luxury shopping destination – where you’ll find specialty boutiques and prestigious department stores that overlook the ocean.

If a quintessential Southern California beach town escape is your idea of the perfect vacation, Orange County is the right place to be. You can’t really go wrong in this area – but staying at the St. Regis Monarch will take your Orange County experience to a whole new level.
