Founder and creative director of Fidelity Denim, Jason Trotzuk jets between Vancouver and Los Angeles (he lives in the former and makes his line of blue jeans in the latter). The denim doyen and frequent flyer is also passionate about guitars, red wine and his two kids. He tries our travel questionnaire on for size.
The in-flight film you hope for: Nothing new, but classic, Airplane.
The last book you took on holiday: Keith Richards’ biography, Life.
You tend to pack too many: More like, tend to not to pack enough of! I’m on a plane almost every week so I only do carry-on, I usually buy what I need when I’m on the road. At the end of the year my closet is full of about 200 white v-neck t-shirts.
Your idea of travel happiness: No line-ups through security; airports with great restaurants (Portland has the best); a bed on a plane; rent-a-car with a killer sound system, Bluetooth rigged and an iPad loaded with my favorite tunes; and, sleeping in my own bed for a night between travels would be amazing too.
Your idea of travel misery: Four cities in three days.
Your favorite quality in a hotel: A hotel that is close to heart of the city, where you can simply step out and you’re in the middle of it all.
What do you appreciate most in a travel partner? Someone who can move fast and always be on the go. They must love red wine. It is important to enjoy a glass or two of wine amidst travel chaos.
What is your greatest extravagance while abroad? My travel case of grooming products—all the best quality to pamper oneself with after a long day.
What is your favorite journey to take? Trips to L.A. (this happens weekly). Short 2.5 hour flight. Enjoying West Hollywood with friends and all the great California red wine to be drank. Also, the Rainbow, Roxy, Viper Room, Whisky A Go Go. Great restaurants and guitar shops.
What is your greatest fear abroad? Having an accident or falling ill and having to go through the U.S. medical system.
What is the travel habit you most deplore in yourself? I go to the same restaurants and stay at the same hotels in every city. I don’t like surprises, especially when I’m traveling.
In what travel situations do you lie? Never! There is such a thing as travel karma. As a result I have never lost my luggage.
When and where were you last happiest? Last Thursday night at LAX. Just barely made the flight to Vancouver. They let me and my crew on even though we were very late.
What is your most treasured take-along? My daughter. Every so often I take my daughter Claudia with me for very special daddy and daughter work trips. Or my black hoodie, it’s my Linus Blanket.
What is your travel motto? Enjoy the moment. It could be worse… I could be sitting at home in Vancouver watching the rain come down.
