Refreshing Fridays: Grab a Guinness

The crisp fall air ushers in cravings for comforting food made from nature’s bounty. Squash, turnips, yams, potatoes, apples and more make for delicious ingredients, and they’re all washed down perfectly with a pint of Guinness.

And while we’re talking about Guinness, does anyone remember the uproar Gwyneth Paltrow caused a few years ago when she was spotted drinking a Guinness while pregnant?

Well, a new study from England claims that there is new proof that the occasional glass of beer or wine while pregnant does no harm to the fetus. In fact, researchers found that the children of mothers who drank one to two glasses of alcohol a week while pregnant showed no signs of developmental delays or behavioral problems such as hyperactivity.

These kids actually scored slightly better on cognitive tests! Of course, that result may have more to do with social and environmental factors that contribute to women drinking “lightly” as opposed to moderately or heavily (both still considered BAD during pregnancy), but it’s interesting nonetheless.

So here’s to Guinness, and to Gwyneth Paltrow for having a pint when it still wasn’t deemed acceptable to do so. And here’s to Ireland, the country that gave the world Guinness… not to mention some of the best luxury hotels in the world.
