Refreshing Fridays: Having The Last Word

- Joy Pecknold, Passport blog editor

The Last Word is well-travelled.

The prohibition-era cocktail with a green pallor debuted at the Detroit Athletic Club. It then disappeared for a few decades before resurfacing in Seattle at the Zig Zag Café (it’s the Emerald City after all) after being discovered in an old bartender’s guide book. From there it trickled its way south to Portland, north to Vancouver, across to New York City and Chicago, before going transcontinental at bars in London, Amsterdam and Australia.

Here’s the ingredient list to mix one up yourself:

1/2 ounce gin

1/2 ounce lime juice

1/2 ounce green Chartreuse

1/2 ounce maraschino liqueur

(Shake with ice and strain into a cocktail glass).

Or on your next visit to one these big cities, let the pros prep and pour one for you:

SEATTLE – Stay: W Seattle, Sip: Zig Zag Café

VANCOUVER – Stay: Fairmont Pacific Rim, Sip: The Diamond

NEW YORK – Stay: The Standard, Sip: The Clover Club

LONDON – Stay: The Arch London, Sip: The Living Room

SYDNEY – Stay: Establishment Hotel, Sip: Eau De Vie
