Sonora Resort: Go Fishing in Canada’s Wilderness

- Karen Mumby,

One of Relais & Chateaux’s newest members, Sonora Resort, is an absolute jewel amid the wild beauty and pristine waters of Canada’s West Coast. You’ll enjoy this British Columbia hotel if you’re looking for a great hotel for fishing or spa hotel.

Sonora Resort, on Canada’s west coast is located in one of the most beautiful and unspoiled places on earth: Desolation Sound. An area of wild and enchanting natural beauty, it is surrounded by rugged mountains, pristine waters, thriving wildlife and precious old-growth forest. Best known as a fishing lodge — and perfect for a great fishing vacation in Canada’s wilderness — the resort has recently been expanded to include amenities and services designed to complement the fishers, and offer alternatives for those guests not entirely thrilled to spend eight hours every day on the water.

We arrived in a Seair Cessna Caravan from Vancouver. The 50-minute flight North afforded us spectacular West Coast views as we flew up the Sound, over Stuart Island and the Arran Rapids.

General Manager Sean Ross and his entourage of staff were there to greet us and, after a quick briefing that included issuance of fishing licenses for everyone, Sean took us on a tour of the resort.

Sonora Resort’s buildings are strategically placed like pods around the property to take full advantage of the most breathtaking views. Each of the three guestroom buildings comes with its own common area that includes a fireplace, flat screen TV, exterior deck, and a refrigerator filled with complimentary beverages and snacks.

Sonora Resort in British ColombiaIn the Arbutus Lodge, our room (51) was immaculate with hard wood flooring and a stone fireplace; the bathrooms have heated floors, large double sinks, slate showers with rainfall showerhead and a soaker tub, all complimented with Aveda spa products.

The room’s refrigerator was well stocked with water, sodas, wine, beer, liquors, and snacks, all complimentary.

The view from our window was amazing – we sat for hours wrapped in one of the resorts luxurious bathrobes sipping on our favorite beverage while watching the magical display of nature’s finest animals; seals and otters playing in the water as the tide currents rushed by and bald eagles swooping down to catch their next meal.

Chef Matthew Stowe treated us to some of the most wonderful cuisine. The first night I couldn’t decide between the Halibut or the Salmon, so the Chef sent out a little of both.

After dinner we were booked for a couples pedicure at the luxurious Spa and Wellness Centre. The spa offers world-class services that are designed to pamper you from head to toe, and includes three outdoor heated mineral pools and a fully equipped gym. The spa is located beside a newly constructed covered tennis court.

The next morning we were up early for our fishing excursion. Our guide, Tommy Thompson, a former Canadian Olympic Ski Jump team member, knew exactly where the salmon were biting.

Within an hour we had a beautiful 20-pound salmon to take home. For lunch, all the resorts’ guests that were out on the water, converged on a specific spot on one island called John’s Point, where we feasted on barbecue beef ribs, chicken, salmon and scallops, a variety of salads, fresh homemade bread, and then, just when we thought we couldn’t eat anymore, out came the trays of deserts that we just couldn’t pass up.

Pastry Chef Charles Masson’s homemade cookies were the perfect treat that helped some of us swallow our stories about ‘the one that got away’.

After lunch, while others went out for more fishing, we headed back to the lodge for a couples massage. Before our massage I was treated to 20 minutes in their renowned hydrotherapy tub. The tub embraces you from head to toe with 252 programmable jets along with chromo (light) therapy. We returned to our room fully relaxed and rejuvenated, opened a bottle of wine and gazed out the window to watch the show that nature had prepared for us.

Grizzley Bear in CanadaThe resort is also fully equipped to accommodate ones’ business requirements with a Business Centre providing wireless internet access and meeting and conference rooms capable of accommodating groups looking for a corporate retreat, or perhaps a very unique team building adventure.

One of the most popular activities at Sonora is a tour to view the elusive west coast grizzly bear in their natural habitat. Through the cooperation of the Homalco First Nations Band, Sonora guests can view the bears’ home territory from one of three uniquely designed 10-foot high viewing stands.

Sonora Resort is the ultimate all-inclusive hideaway. Whether you fly in by float plane, arrive by boat, or take Sonora Resort’s 12 seat helicopter, the views are spectacular. Sonora Resort has truly redefined luxury in the wilderness!

  8. Not the kind vacation me and the boys would love but my wife would definitely enjoy the pampering Sonora Resort has to offer. Maybe its time for her to have the vacation of her dreams. We on the other hand would slip out and go fishing.
