P.S. I Love You

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

When I travel to a hot location I want to experience more than just the good weather. I had the opportunity to spend two nights at the Parker Palm Springs and not only did I get the heat but I also had an unforgettable time!

parker-palm-springs

Located in the desert like climate of Palm Springs CA, the Parker Palm Springs has a very private and exclusive feeling while also being close to the city centre.

Upon entering the resort I was greeted by the most welcoming staff whom also were all quite complimentary to the overall look and feel of the Parker. Rich with a very colorful history, “Formerly Gene Autry’s Melody Ranch and Merv Griffin’s Givenchy Resort and Spa, the Parker Palm Springs is situated on thirteen acres of landscaped gardens surrounded by the desert and mountains”. The Parker has a very fun energy to the entire hotel. The smile I had as soon as I arrived didn’t leave my face at any point during my stay.

My room was a private villa that lead out to a private poolside area. A wall to wall mirror in the bathroom filed the whole villa with light making the room feel very open and relaxing. It was extremely comfortable and clean with the most amazing decor. A very thoughtfully stacked mini fridge, unique wall art and artistically themed coffee table books were just some of the tiny details that made my room a delight to be in. I had everything I needed to carry out any type of travel, an iron and ironing board were present had I intended on attending a conference as well as enough ( might I add quiet beautiful ) furniture to entertain more than one guest were also tastefully picked out for the villa.

parker-palm-springs-suite

When I wasn’t poolside I checked out the Lemonade Stand, famous for its muddled lemonade, which was suggested to me upon arrival by the friendly people at the front desk. I relaxed at the lemonade stand for a long time as I soaked up the sun and the properties history that the staff informed me about.

I felt like I was in a dream where every staff member was there to provide me and only me with a hotel experience that is only provided to celebrities when they frequent the Parker.

Another wonderful feature of the Parker is the well-maintained grounds. I spent some time walking along its Palm tree trimmed paths taking in some of the beautiful set ups they had going on such as a life size chess set, outdoor fire pit lined with comfy chairs for unwinding in as well as the second pool located not too far from the first one that my room had access too.

parker-palm-springs-california

I also took some time to take in the infamous menu at the Parker. The food was not only a feast for my stomach but my eyes as well. Everything I ordered was just as much about the presentation as it was about the taste.

The Parker Palm Springs left me with the best memories and the urge to return back as soon as possible! It truly is an amazing place that I would recommend to anyone who is looking for first class service and an unforgettable stay.

With the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games coming to a close this weekend, why not throw your own closing ceremonies party with a Gold Cocktail?

martini-goldGold Cocktail recipe:

The Peninsula Beverly Hills: A Flawless Luxury Experience

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

I’d always heard wonderful things about the Peninsula Beverly Hills, so I was quite excited to be finally experiencing the hotel.

the-peninsula-beverly-hills-suite

I checked into my suite late on a Friday evening, and to my delight noticed my pillow had my initials on it. Nice touch! Too tired to venture out, I spent my first night indulging in their extensive in-room dining menu, the large Italian marble soaker tub, and ultimately, my king sized plush bed.

Saturday morning, I headed to the Peninsula Spa for their signature organic custom facial and their custom signature massage. It was ultimate bliss. Next time, I’ll make sure to try their White Chocolate Body Souffle treatment. The all natural cherry exfoliate they used on my skin smelled good enough to eat. My skin was literally glowing when I walked out and I was so relaxed and content, I was ready for my next stop; shopping!

-pool

The Peninsula Beverly Hills is located minutes from Rodeo Drive and close to some of the world’s best shopping. I booked the hotel’s Rolls Royce Phantom to roll around Beverly Hills in style. This is a complimentary service for all hotel guests.

the-peninsula-beverly-hills-resturantIn the evening I dined at The Belvedere, the hotel’s triple AAA five diamond award wining restaurant. The grilled Thai Snapper Fillet with Charred mango, bok choy and Blood orange-green apple coconut dill sauce was sensational. And of course, I couldn’t leave without trying a few desserts. Now I’m not normally a big fan of chocolate mousse, but it was recommended that I try the Mousse Au Chocolat with Valrhona Chocolate Pearls. Well, what can I say.. there wasn’t a morsel left in the cup.

the-peninsula-beverly-hills-patio

If I had to choose one word to describe my whole experience: flawless. The service was impeccable and  this hotel goes above and beyond to ensure every need is met as promptly as possible.

My verdict: Spectacular! The Peninsula Beverly Hills was everything I expected and more.

Resort at Pelican Hill Perfect for a Girls’ Getaway

Room at Pelican Hill Resort in California

After navigating the roadways from LAX to Newport, we arrived at Pelican Hill just as the sun was setting over the Pacific Ocean. The Resort at Pelican Hill is situated between the cities of Newport Beach and Laguna Beach.

The entire resort is Italian-inspired, and landscaped with olive and citrus trees. We were swiftly escorted from the grand lobby on a short drive to the resorts gated Bungalow area. We were able to park our rental car right outside our front doors! Although the resort is on over 500 acres, everything is accessible and you don’t need to shuttle everywhere.

Our Bungalow was cozy with a limestone fireplace, private ocean-view terrace, wood beam ceiling, separate living area and huge bathroom. Perfect for me and my best girlfriend that was traveling with me; two ladies need lots of space to get ready!

For a few hours before dinnertime we kicked back in our room around the fireplace, enjoying a glass of Palladio Chianti and some great conversation. It was off to dinner at nearby Javier’s for some Mexican. It was definitely the place to be seen in Newport.

The Resort at Pelican Hill in CaliforniaWe set out for a full day of shopping and sightseeing in Newport. We hit Fashion Island, which is owned by Irvine Company who owns the resort; there we found fantastic shops and department stores. Later we headed to Newport Harbor, and spent time peeking in and out of the quaint boutiques and walking along the streets taking in the ocean living lifestyle.

Returning to the resort in the later afternoon, we thought we ought to check out the Coliseum Pool, which is perfect circle pool 136 feet in diameter. Its very impressive and aptly named as it feels like you’re in a roman coliseum.

We sat out on the veranda of the Coliseum Grill for an afternoon cocktail overlooking the pool, overlooking the golf course, overlooking the ocean! There are actually two golf courses and an impressive spa called the Acqua Colonnade. If you’re planning to keep fit during visit you won’t have trouble here. The resort has impressive fitness facilities including a range of programs including yoga, Pilates, dance and my favorite; the guided Crystal Cove fitness walk.

If being on the water is more your style, you can take advantage of nearby boating activities in Newport Harbor or take the shuttle to Crystal Cove State Park; where you can swim, surf, dive and explore the trails.

Pool at the Resort at Pelican Hill, NewportIf your stay on the Pacific Coast is more long term then my two days, you’ll want to look into the Villa experience. The Villas are a private enclave within the resort. You can choose from 2, 3 and 4-bedrooms. The Villas have their own staff and all-access to the resort amenities.

I can only imagine what it would be like to experience Pelican Hill over the holiday season. They have fully decorated Bungalows available for Christmas! Might be nice to have someone take care of all the trimmings this year, including the feast.

Tyra Banks’ Male Model Discovery at The Parker Palm Springs

Tyra Banks at the Parker Palm Springs Hotel

Tyra Banks, former supermodel turned TV host (among other things), was recently vacationing with friends in Palm Springs, California. Of course, Tyra has impeccable taste and stayed at The Parker Palm Springs?

Pool area at Parker Hotel, Palm Springs

As Tyra was about to enjoy a delicious lunch on the patio at Norma’s restaurant her waiter, Juan, (nervous and stumbling over his words) introduced himself.

He should have just introduced himself as ‘America’s Next Top Male Model’ as he was just about to be discovered by one of the most popular supermodels of all time!

Way to go, Juan.

Who knows…maybe you’ll get discovered too during your next vacation in Palm Springs?

Meadowood is the Perfect Californian Escape for Families

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

Located right in the heart of the Napa Valley – California’s wine region, Meadowood is perfect for family vacations, offering excellent service for guests of all ages. VP of Partnerships at TripAdvisor, Nathan Clapton, stayed at this property with his wife and young son.

Meadowood is tucked away off the Silverado Trail in St Helena. St Helena is a nice town, however if you are staying at Meadowood it is hard to build up the enthusiasm to go anywhere else.

My wife and I stayed for three nights with our 2 year old son. We realized that this was going to be special when not only had Meadowood provided toweling robes for us but also for our 2 year old.

He looked very cute in it! The room was spacious, fresh and had central air – we had a tree line cottage, no 37. It was very pleasant to sit out on the deck at dusk drinking a glass of wine. Inside, the highlights were: a very comfortable big bed; paper, wood and kindling sitting in the hearth all ready to go; a high mantelpiece so we could put keys, money and snacks out of our son’s reach; lots of light and double sinks in the bathroom.

The Michelin 2 star Restaurant  was excellent – the tasting menu was delightful, especially the foie gras and the waiter replaced our host’s dropped napkin before he even realized he’d dropped it!

Meadowood in Napa Valley, CaliforniaAll that excellence comes at a price – however given the level of service and quality, I can still say it is good value.

The best feature, for us, was the family pool area. Meadowood has 2 pools – a lap pool for grown-ups and a round family pool.

Our son had his first tentative swim with a float – all floats and pool toys are provided.

What differentiates Meadowood from other hotels is the service – we were given our own itinerary of the activities that the hotel had arranged, they offered to help track down a suit I had left at a hotel in Yosemite, and they asked us what time we would like the room serviced and the beds turned down so no having to tell maid service to go away when you are in flagrante!

I’d highly recommend a stay at this luxury hotel in California. If you want to learn more, there’s another review of Meadowood on the Jetsetter for you to read.

Stars from “The Hills” spotted at Shutters on the Beach

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

Perfect for romance and family vacations, Shutters on the Beach made a guest appearance on “The Hills” on Monday night. This gorgeous California hotel was where a very nervous Spencer Pratt met his fiancé’s gun wielding father, Bill, for the very first time.

Restaurant on the Hills - Shutters on the Beach

If you’ve ever had to ask a cowboy for your girlfriend’s hand in marriage, you’ll know what “The Hills” reality TV star Spencer Pratt was up against. On Monday night’s episode of the Hills, Pratt was tasked with asking Heidi Montag’s father, Bill, for permission to marry his daughter.

Pratt was no prat: he picked a good spot to meet Heidi’s dad. The eager couple met Mr. Montag at Coast, the restaurant at Shutters on the Beach, for brunch – a very classy spot if you ask us. And, after reminding the young suitor that the code of the west states that you must look out for your family, Montag asked Pratt to bond with him over some gun shooting. Now that’s progress!

Could it be that Montag was impressed with Pratt’s personality? Oh right…silly us…what personality?

We think that it was the restaurant and hotel that brought a curl to this straight shooter’s lips, getting him to drop his guard (and his shot gun) and ultimately approve the union between Sir Pratt and Lady Montag.

It’s no secret why this gem of a hotel was featured on “The Hills”. Its central location makes for some pretty easy access to Los Angeles premier galleries, museums and attractions. You’re also steps from the City of Angel’s most interesting neighbourhoods.

Shuttes on the Beach's Restaurant: One PicoShutters on the Beach is one of L.A.’s top hotels. Elegant, cool, unpretentious and boasting panoramic views of the Ocean, you’d be hard pressed to find someone who could say no to you in this stunning location.

Coast, the restaurant that was featured on the Hills, has majestic views of the Ocean. This beach front cafe has a great, fresh menu. With a classy, contemporary Mediterranean look , will you’ll make a great first impression, regardless of how much of a goof you actually are.

Just ask Spencer!

It’s the perfect hangout for the rich, famous and glamorous. Stay here to see the stars, enjoy the Ocean breeze and, of course, to woo your very scary potential father-in-law to agree to your wedding plans.

Sunset Marquis Hotel & VillasKiwi Collection Insider Moira F. has recently returned from a fabulous visit to Los Angeles, the “City of Angels” and comes back with some info on a great little find that is hidden away from the hustle and bustle of Hollywood’s Sunset Strip, namely the Sunset Marquis Hotel & Villas.

The Sunset Marquis Luxury Hotel is quite secluded compared to many in the area, including the famous Pink Beverly Hills Hotel, which is well known to be a Hollywood hot spot. This suited Moira fine as she preferred the peaceful relaxation afforded by the Sunset Marquis.

With some suites offering fireplaces, grand pianos, private terraces and more, the Sunset Marquis sounds like an exceptional romantic retreat inside one of the hippest U.S. cities.
