8 UNESCO World Heritage Destinations
In 1978, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) was created to identify and preserve culturally and naturally significant sites around the globe. Almost 40 years later, over 1,000 locales have been bestowed World Heritage status, creating the ultimate bucket list for experiential travelers.
Each year, the World Heritage Committee convenes to discuss potential new additions to this exclusive club, with an average of 20 new entrants added each year. To make the list, a setting or structure must have great historical or cultural significance, with examples including Australia’s Ayers Rock, India’s Taj Mahal and the Italian city of Venice. Paired with the perfect hotel, visiting a UNESCO World Heritage Site makes for a culturally enriching getaway.
