Tour de France 2010

The world’s most prestigious bike race is under way, and this year, it began in Rotterdam, the Netherlands (Holland).

Two hundreds top riders from around the world contended in individual time trials of 8.9 kms in Saturday’s preliminary event to make it this far… but there’s still a long way to go.

The competition will be held in 21 stages. Starting with Sunday’s 1st stage, riders in 22 teams will set off on a three week tour that covers 3,600 kms. The route runs through rugged roads in the Alps, and there have already been some big spills.

The top riders will have reached the finish line on July 25th on the Champs Elysees in Paris after passing though Belgium.

Always the headline-stealer, Lance Armstrong of the United States is attracting attention due to speculation that this race might be his final appearance. He has won  7 Tour de France races thus far. Maybe it’s time to let someone else have a shot at the title, hey Lance?

Of course, Kiwi Collection has some suggestions about where to stay if you’re heading to France for the race:
