Zurich – Where to Stay & Play

- Federica Antonioli, Kiwi Expert

Zurich may be know as Switzerland’s financial capital, but that’s not all it has to offer. With its thriving art scene, vibrant nightlife, and rich cultural heritage, the city on the lake has become one of Europe’s top destinations.

For these reasons, when planning where I’d spend my New Years to ring in 2011, I chose Zurich in a heartbeat. And with so much to do and see, a peaceful retreat close to Zurich’s top attractions was a must for me. Deciding where to stay was an easy choice: I chose The Park Hyatt Zurich which is situated in the heart of the city, just steps away from the Bahnhofstrasse, and the Altstadt. The ideal location of this hotel provided convenient access to Zurich’s finest restaurants, bars, shopping districts and city sights, such as the Alt Statt, Nieder Dorf and the lake.

What struck me most about this contemporary hotel was the staff’s attentiveness to detail, truly making my stay as comfortable and luxurious as possible. From a chilled bottle of champagne upon arrival to their unwavering willingness to accommodate their guests, I felt catered to by able hands which allowed me to enjoy the experience of the trip to the fullest.

I can’t forget to mention the bed at the Park Hyatt. This bed was a little piece of heaven that really made me feel at home. Fueled by a good night’s rest, I always started the day refreshed and full of energy, ready to explore the city, including my top five activities in Zurich.

For those of you planning on visiting Zurich, below is a list of some of the fun things the city is known for:

1. Street Parade– Celebrate love, peace, freedom, generosity and tolerance at Europe’s largest annual street party.  One million people from across the world party along the sunny banks of Lake Zurich as the best underground DJs spin electrifying house and techno beats. Occurs annually on the second Saturday in August.

2. Bahnhofstrasse– Stroll beneath the lights of ‘The World’s Largest Timepiece’ on this world famous street.  Shop the latest collections from Europe’s leading fashion houses or stop into an art gallery opening for a champagne toast.

3. Lake Zurich–  Browse local artisans’ wares as you walk along the scenic lakeside promenade.  Then head down to the docks to rent a pedalo and spend a lazy afternoon on the water.

4. Altstadt- Admire the medieval architecture as you explore the charming streets of Zurich’s historic Old Town.  Then head to Le Dezaley for some traditional Swiss fondue with the locals.

5. Swiss National Museum – The museum was constructed in 1898 and looks like a fairy castle. The museum accommodates a wide collection of the Swiss history and culture. Located at the Museumstrasse 2, just behind the Main Train Station.
