As you enter Chateau Yering you may, for just a split second, believe you've been teleported to a European Manor House in Bordeaux. But no, you're in the heart of Australia's fertile wine country.
When Paul and Hubert de Castella constructed this mansion in the Yarra Valley just outside of Melbourne in 1854, they introduced a slice of Europe to the rugged beauty of the region. Two centuries later, as you walk up the rose-lined driveway, you'll see that European "Je'ne sai quoi" still lives on.
Chateau Yering is a heritage listed Victorian mansion with 32 suites and rooms bordering the Yarra River. The base structure of the main house is essentially as built in the 1800's save a few small alterations.
If you have the opportunity, take a few minutes to explore The Library, Chinese Room, and Lounge. All three rooms are intact with original fittings like Australian Cedar window jambs and doors that have been maintained with a level of care and attention equal to the day they were built.
