From the veranda at Choupana Hills Resort & Spa above the port-town of Funchal, the fragrances of sub-tropical flowers flood your senses while the promise of a glass of Madeira tempts your palate.

This luxury hotel on the island of Madeira, in Portugal is comprised of 56 rooms, two family bungalows, and four suites surrounded by exotic sub-tropical gardens and sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean. The rooms are dressed in warm wood and red tones with décor and furniture chosen by interior decorator Didier Lefort to reflect Asian, African, and other exotic influences.

The bar and restaurant are in a separate annex while a third building houses the Choupana Hills Health and Beauty Spa, best known for its two- and three-day progressive treatments.

If it's an adventure you seek, get an early start on a hike into the mountains towering over the town of Funchal. Conversely, you can descend through the botanical gardens and down to the center of town. When you're ready to return, catch the breathtaking tram back the hotel. Golfers will be happy to know they will receive preferential tee times and preferred rates at both Palheiro Golf Course and Santo da Serra.
