It's just your first clinic at Estancia La Paz's polo club, but already you understand why Argentines have such a passion for the sport. As your horse canters across the field, you take in the view of the Sierra Chicas Mountains and the Asconchinga River. Tomorrow you'll go exploring the 5,000-acre property in a 4x4 - or head up into the mountains on horseback for a night of camping.

In the meantime, you're content to sit down for a supper of regional cuisine at the grand ranch house, which dates back to 1830 and has colonial- and Renaissance-style extensions. With 20 rooms and suites, Estancia La Paz was the country retreat of turn-of-last-century Argentine president Julio Argentino Roca. Its period furniture and artwork capture the charm of those bygone days.

Modern conveniences include the ranch's swimming pool and spa - and nearby Asconchinga golf course, an 18-hole stunner. Equally eye-catching is 17th-century Jesuit ranch Santa Catalina, one of many local historical sites.

Asconchinga is north of Córdoba, the provincial capital and Argentina's second-largest city. By car, the ranch is 60 minutes from Córdoba's Pajas Blancas International Airport, which accommodates flights from Buenos Aires, Santiago de Chile, São Paulo, and other centers.
