So this is how coffee gets made - on a lush mountainside under Agua Volcano, whose cloud-draped cone dominates the landscape. After a rich morning cup of java by the pool, you're itching to explore 750-acre Filadelfia Coffee Resort, a finca (farm) and eco-reserve that reaches 8,000 feet above sea level. Around here, the best way to see the sights is from the back of an obliging mule.

Reputed to be Guatemala's oldest coffee plantation, colonial-style Filadelfia Coffee Resort has just 20 rooms and suites. All face the volcano and are flush with modern amenities such as Pratesi Italian linens, iPod docks, and 32-inch LCD TVs. At 1,200 sq. ft., the Master Suites have plenty of space for an in-room massage.

Follow a late-afternoon tennis game with a dinner of international cuisine at Pergaminos restaurant - or some local fare amid the coffee bushes at Cafetenango. And remember, you're tantalizingly close to local attractions like Lake Atitlan and the splendid Mayan ruins of Tikal.
