Rolling green hills, beautiful medieval villages, tantalizing cuisine - sun-drenched Tuscany thrills the senses. You're feeling doubly invigorated as you contemplate the scenery from a marble hydro-massage "armchair" in Fonteverde Natural Spa Resort's thermal Bioaquam Pool. Revered since Etruscan times, the mineral-rich hot springs are said to have anti-aging powers.

Italian history comes alive at Fonteverde Natural Spa Resort, which Grand Duke Ferdinando I de' Medici built in the 1600s. The restored boutique property contains 66 rooms and 14 suites. Two of the latter have terraces, and details like fine draperies and elaborate coffered ceilings recall the Tuscan villas of old.

That said, the spa has every modern amenity, from Pilates classes to a medical staff. Take lunch by the spa pool, but save your appetite for dinner at Ferdinando I. Like the sunset view of the surrounding valley, chef Emanuele Venditti's traditional Tuscan cooking calls for a vintage Brunello.

Located at the southern end of central Italy's Tuscany region, Fonteverde Natural Spa Resort is in the Val d'Orcia district near the town of San Casciano dei Bagni. By car, resort is two hours south of Firenze Peretola airport, two hours and 30 minutes north of Rome's Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport, and two hours north of Rome's Ciampino Airport. The nearest train station, Chiusi, is a 20-minute drive north of San Casciano dei Bagni.
