A converted flour mill in central Frankfurt, the Gerbermuehle manages to be both comforting hotel, and austere exercise in modern form.

Prepare to be charmed by this converted mill set on a serene river.

When the smell of freshly baked bread wafts up from the restaurant kitchen, the fact that this was German millhouse becomes very evident. Built in the 16th Century, the Gerbermuehle is a now style-obsessed hotel where exposed beams, irregularly shaped rooms, and vaulted ceilings reveal hints of its varied pedigree.

Light spills into the bright lobby, and offsets an otherwise dark combination of dusky stone flooring and black wallpaper. Dramatic to say the least, the interior design theme leaps from pink beds and bright walls, to stone walls and post-modern furnishings.

The hotel's 500-seat Summer Garden buzzes with locals catching a drink before ballet at The Forsythe Company, or a performance at the nearby Frankfurt Opera. On warm summer evenings, walk along the River Main before the show, and give your legs a soon-to-be-deserved pre-stretch.
