A former private home, the Hotel Abtei ushers travellers into a Germany that's formal, yet somehow, completely welcoming.

Away from the hustle and bustle of Hamburg's center, visitors find the truly elegant Hotel Abtei, situated on a peaceful, tree-lined street.

This country house-style hotel has only 11 rooms, all individually furnished with mahogany and cherrywood antiques, as well as lush fabrics and linens. A few suites have balconies or private conservatories. (A guest favorite is Room 7, with an antique "porcher bathtub" tucked in the alcove.)

When the weather is nice, breakfast is served in the beautiful garden behind the hotel, or in one of the downstairs rooms. Here, no detail is overlooked: homemade pastries are served in silver breadbaskets, and fresh flowers adorn the rooms. In the evening, dinner is served in the intimate Prince Frederik restaurant.

Alster Lake, just a few minutes from the hotel, is wonderful for a leisurely walk or boat ride. Prefer to stay land-locked? It's only a 15-minute bus ride to Hamburg's city center.
