The first Tuesday of each month, the Salome club (top-society cigar-smoking ladies) can be viewed in the glass-walled humidor.

Directly in the center of this captivatingly beautiful city rests the historic Hotel de l'Europe, a place that expresses Amsterdam's unique mix of historic features and progressive thinking.

Historic in that this hotel (once a bank) still boasts art by the country's many great masters. Not to mention Delft-blue carpeting in the library, and the restored exterior walls facing directly onto the mighty Amstel River.

Progressive in that it's certified Gold by the Green Key program, an environmentally sustainable organization. This modern slant can also be sampled in many of the more recently renovated suites, each inspired by works of the Dutch Masters.

Seven conference and meeting rooms are also available, useful for anything from a local tête-à-tête, to a global meeting of the minds.

Three restaurants serve diners day an night. Try La Terrasse for that canal-boat feeling, or Brasserie le Relais, were a Michelin Star resides. For a casual drink with local business leaders and celebrities, check out Freddy's Bar, named after Freddy Heineken himself.
