Being close to nature is lovely, but being directly in it is, well, lovelier. Jicaro Island Lodge, Nicaragua allows you to hug as many trees as you like, and offers a cushy reprieve when you need a little lovin' yourself.

On a private island in lake Nicaragua, Jicaro Island Lodge is as off the grid as you can get – in a good way. In one of nine Casitas, you'll look out over the lake and think, "This sort of camping is much more my speed." Just then, your room service arrives. Classic.

In your Casita, horizontal and vertical wooden slats break up the two-story space, opening periodically to reveal views to the lake. Chill out with a book on the hammock at sunset, before retiring to your bug-safe, netted king-size bed.

Fresh, local ingredients are law at the restaurant here. Feel free to ask the chef yourself, as he'll be preparing your dinner right in front of you.

The lodge is also famed as a yoga retreat, should you belong to the super-stretchy set. The big draw, though, are the outdoor activities. Kayaking, tours of Granada, artisanal fishing, adventure tours, bird watching, and many more pursuits worth bringing your hiking boots for.
