Located in the outbuildings of a fairytale-perfect, 15th-century castle, Domaine de la Bretesche has laid down swords and arrows in favor of golf clubs and cocktail shakers. How civilized.

Be it time spent on the golf course or by the pool, hours pass like minutes here.

Hooves beat out a warning in the still morning. A rider emerges from the mist of the forest, flag billowing. Is he friend or foe? Teeth clenched, a sentry reaches for his quiver.

That was 600 years ago, though. And today, Domaine de la Bretesche is a much more sedate place to lay your head. Located near the marshes of Brière, this Brittany time machine offers 31 rooms in its main building, as well as 25 cottages sleeping two to six guests each.

In the shadow of the castle's ramparts is the 18-hole golf course. Framed by a century-old forest, the course is often hailed as one of the best in all of France.

All the swinging will likely work up quite a hunger, but before you settle in for local French cuisine at The Montaigu restaurant, enjoy a glass of wine at the bar, once a stable for the castle's prized horses.

Cap off the evening with a trip to the spa, where ayurvedic massage mingles with Balinese treatments in a contemporary haven.
