This boutique hotel features just 41 guest rooms and five suites. Each is surprisingly spacious, and comes clad in whitewashed walls, slate flooring and cast-iron beds. Each guest accommodation also features views over the main courtyard, harking back to the property’s inception as an 18th century corral de vecinos (traditional shared courtyard house). There’s plenty of modern creature comforts too, with complimentary Wi-Fi Internet, flatscreen TVs, and minibars with tantalizing Amaller chocolates from Barcelona.

Hospes Las Casas del Rey de Baeza’s rooftop pool provides another communal gathering point, fringed with potted cactuses and blue-cushioned sun loungers. Beside the pool there’s a small relaxation area and solarium where Ayurvedic, Thai, shiatsu and aromatherapy massages are offered in one of four treatment rooms.

At Azahar restaurant, guests are invited to salivate over a menu of modern Andalucian delicacies overlooking a leafy patio. This delightfully rustic restaurant is best experienced via a six-course tasting menu, paired with a bottle from the hotel’s extensive wine list. While there’s no bar, there are plenty of alfresco patios and the pool terrace in which to enjoy a beverage at any time of day.
