As fresh and intriguing today as it was back in 1898, Ocean House brings a little pageantry from across the pond to the shores of Rhode Island.
Walking the 13-acre grounds of Ocean House, guests will immediately understand the draw of this place: with the fresh sea air, near-perfect croquette lawn, chef's garden, and putting green. That's not to mention the house's wrap-around patio, an ideal place to curl up in a wool blanket with a book and a glass of wine.
When not strolling the beach in search of shells and/or meaning, guests of Ocean House have 49 rooms to choose from, each dressed in turn-of-the-century American style. Bold, striped patterns and heavy fabrics keep things cozy, while Internet and iPod docks bring this old dame up to date.
On blustery days, don your Captain's hat and head out on one of the hotel's yachts. If you left your sea legs at home, choose instead to take a delicious course through Ocean House's Farm + Vine program.
Then again, if you'd rather enjoy food than prepare it, you can saunter into any of five eateries on the property. Choose from the formal Seasons for farm-to-table fine dining, or The Living Room and Verandah for tea, scones, and savory little sandwiches. A guest favorite is actually down near the shore, at the Dune Cottage. Life doesn’t get much better than sitting down with a cold beer and a sandwich. Cue the roar of the ocean and chirping birds, and exhale.
