In the Purros Conservancy of Kaokoland, the Okahirongo Elephant Lodge is one of Namibia's most remote destinations, where desert elephants, black rhinos, and lions thrive.
Wooden walkways connect the open-air sitting areas and pool to your adobe rondavel (cottage). Your rondavel features locally carved furnishings that exemplify the African culture and harmonize with the ochre-and-honey-toned decor. Your bathtub, in the large en suite, has been positioned to afford you spectacular views of the landscape.
And don't miss out on tracking the rare desert-adapted elephants (it's called the Elephant Lodge for a reason, after all). Lion tracking, with the Desert Lion Project, is also a must-do if you want to see the big cat.
For a different experience, try the hikes around the Hoarusib Valley. A visit to a nearby Himba village offers invaluable insight into the rigors of living in a desert environment.
