More than a century old, Otahuna Lodge is a historic landmark and one of the Australasia's last vestiges of true Victorian architecture. Stop in and smell the manicured roses.

A superb job has been done in renovating the property.

Emerging from an extensive four-month renovation in 2007, stately Otahuna Lodge has reclaimed its standing as one of New Zealand's premier luxury destinations.

With antique gardens originally cultivated by a Kew Gardens-trained keeper, Otahuna is a horticulturalist's personal heaven. They're a work of passion and love, spearheaded by lodge founder Sir Heaton Rhodes who served as president of the Canterbury Horticultural Society for more than 50 years.

The endless daffodil field will astound you; this was once the largest such field in all of New Zealand. Hill and dale covered in bright yellow, this sunny carpet eventually spawned the bulbs that now color Christchurch's Hagley Park.

But not everything here is pastoral - Otahuna is fitted with all the amenities you'd expect from a luxury resort, including super-king beds, fine custom-made linens, a heated pool and Jacuzzi, tennis court, fitness center and a spa.

Otahuna Lodge is a garden paradise just a half-hour's drive south of the world's Garden City, Christchurch (also the site of the nearest airport). Snowy mountains dominate the horizon, while rivers and creeks run wild across the pastures and through the woods. Harbors overlooking the Pacific are just 15 minutes east. Further south you'll find the celebrated but currently threatened Lake Ellesmere, New Zealand's fifth largest lake.
