Baring the name of Vietnam's last Empress, Princess D'Annam Resort & Spa is comprised of 57 stylish villas set on the constantly changing South China Sea, and clearly illustrates the not-so-subtle beauty of this region.

The design here shows the deft French influence left over from postcolonial times, but leans further towards a clean, modernist take on classical Vietnamese architecture. Villas feature hardwood verandas, and private plunge pools. For a bigger soak, dive into one of four pools located throughout the resort, while wondering if it's too early to request another bowl of pho, an addictive noodle soup served fresh in the main resort dining room.

Post-soup, stroll through the ginger garden, marveling at how things seem to constantly bloom here. Heading back towards the beach, guests may notice the Ke Ga lighthouse standing on a rocky outcrop off in the distance. Perhaps a basket-boat trip is in order tomorrow.
