Now that the comrades have abandoned this former Communist Party archive house, this Bauhaus-inspired fortress of style and substance has been re-imagined as Soho House Berlin.

Tie = no service? Indeed, the club is serious about its casual dress code. Relax, it's good for you.

This Berlin monolith was originally a 1920's department store before being seized, and eventually ending up as a holding spot for secretive Communist documents. Following reunification, the Bauhaus marvel sat empty for years until Soho decided to restore the structure to its original grandeur - and then some.

Today, the Soho House Berlin offers 40 rooms over four floors. The décor can be described as a mix of classical, modern, and industrial - all wielded with whimsy and restraint. An example? How about the vintage record player in your room? Complete with handpicked vinyl.

On the lower floor, a theatre seems to drown in red velvet – a throwback to tastes of communist rulers. The Cowshed offers two opposites, a relaxing spa, and progressive gym. On floor number two, the Politburo is an event space available for you and a hundred pals.

For drinks, the rooftop bar is the place to roost; hop in the open-air pool if you need alternate refreshment. At Cecconi's, Venetian-inspired dishes flood out into another velvety room - this time in deep blue.
