Inspired by a desire of the Spanish King, Hotel Ritz Madrid was intended to give the Spanish capital a hotel luxurious enough for royalty to stay. Luckily, it's succeeded.

This very traditional hotel is worth a visit, even if you're not staying the night.

The late ruler of Spain, King Alphonso XIII, got married in 1906. At the time, he was embarrassed that Madrid didn't have a hotel that was luxurious enough to be a suitable place for his guests to stay. He set the wheels in motion to have something built that could rival the Ritz in Paris. What kings want, kings get, and so Hotel Ritz Madrid opened its doors a few years later.

And that story should tell you much of what you need to know. Then, this Baroque palace was meant to provide aristocratic guests a taste of home. And, if you happen to own enormous crystal chandeliers, marble bathrooms, and a ballroom where a harpist plays, then maybe it will remind you of home too.

Hotel Ritz, Madrid is surrounded by some of Madrid's must-see sightseeing destinations. Plan at least a day for the huge and prestigious collections at the Prado and the Thyssen Museum. And just try to walk through this fashion-forward city without picking up a few choice articles for yourself.
