Overview

The Strand: a colonial gem overlooking the Yangon River, which continues to attract Myanmar's most exacting visitors.

When it opened in 1901, Myanmar's Strand hotel was the jewel in the Sarkies brothers' crown. (A brief history lesson: the Sarkies brothers were the 19th century southeast Asian equivalent of Donald Trump.) Today, the hotel remains a colonial landmark in the former Burmese capital.

The imposing structure contains only 32 rooms and suites, all high ceilings and teakwood floors (another history lesson: teak is largely what brought the British here in the first place). Luxurious bathrooms feature the latest fixtures. The transcendent Strand Suite, among Yangon's biggest and best, houses two fully fitted bathrooms and an attached butler's pantry, with a veranda overlooking the Yangon River.

The Strand has been refurbished over the years to include a wide range of facilities, including a spa, boutique, and jewelry gallery. The hotel's collection of local art is another central feature.
