Never mind the pastoral setting, the impeccable service, or the golf. The Vineyard at Stockcross is noteworthy for one reason beyond all others: the food.

It would be easy to go on and on about The Vineyard at Stockcross' intimate service and peaceful English countryside setting just outside Newbury, or to extol its 49 individually designed luxury suites. After all, who can resist the stately charm of four-poster beds and Italian marble bathrooms?

It would be easier still to laud the on-site Vineyard Spa, with its tranquil, themed suites and panoply of treatment options, or the nearby Donnington Valley Golf Club - among the UK's most beautiful, and most difficult.

It would be easy to do these things, as countless guests have, but it would also be missing the point. The real reason thousands flock here ever year is gastronomic.

The Restaurant at The Vineyard, winner of two Michelin stars, serves classic French cuisine with Mediterranean and far eastern influences. Of course, English options are also available. Sirloin of beef with Yorkshire pudding (a national delicacy) and roast vegetables is a particular favorite.
