Given enough time, everything comes back into style. The Whiteface Lodge in Lake Placid, New York aims to revive the Great Camp era of the early 1900s, when the northeast's most prominent families favored the bucolic Adirondacks over distant tropical beaches. Conifers, one; palm trees, zero.

Aesthetically speaking, The Whiteface Lodge is not unlike Twin Peaks' Great Northern Hotel - minus the spooky soundtrack and all-consuming web of secrets. (You'll be happy to know they serve a great cup of coffee.) Of course, a lot has changed since the early 90s, so you'll have to forgive anachronisms such as high-speed internet and the thoroughly modern American fare at the hotel's restaurant, KANU.

Beyond its rustic, almost stoic charm, The Whiteface Lodge's true appeal is the opportunity to go traipsing through thousands of miles of hiking trails, or boating on pristine Lake Placid. You'll never forget the taste of the crisp Adirondack air, or the call of the loons piercing the night sky.
