Running up to the 4,039 feet a.s.l. peak will be one of the many events in the World Police and Fire Games that will run July 31, 2009, to August 9th, 2009, in Vancouver and the surrounding Lower Mainland of British Columbia, Canada.
Police officers, fire fighters, customs and correction officers from around the world will compete in 66 sports at 50 different venues in the Vancouver, Coast & Mountains region. Besides such traditional Olympic events such as track and field, swimming and hockey, there will be contests for police service dogs, a SWAT challenge for Peace Officers, a stair race and plenty of marksmanship.
Expect, also, angling and trap shooting, martial arts and slow pitch softball, scuba diving, Gaelic football and wrist wrestling. This being British Columbia, athletes will also test their mettle at dragon boat races and a Grouse Grind Mountain Race (Grouse Mountain on Vancouver’s North Shore, has been described as nature’s ultimate Stairmaster).
Many are also looking forward to the Games' Toughest Competitor Alive contest, set for Coquitlam’s Town Centre Sports Complex, August 1-4, 2009. Here, a five-kilometre run, 100-metre swim and obstacle course are just three of eight featured elements.
In all, over 10,000 athletes and their families are expected to make their way to The World Police and Fire Games and all events are open to the public. While you are in Vancouver, by the way, do check out

the new Shangri-La Hotel, Vancouver, it is certainly one of the best hotels in Vancouver, if not Canada. Read more about its opening here.
You might also like to take time off to visit local British Columbia artisans. John Gordon and Kim Stansfield, for instance, operate "The Vinegar Works" at Valentine Farm.
They produce certified organic red, white and fruit-infused wine vinegars and wine jellies from the farm's own Pinot Meunier and Gewurztraminer grapes (as one of the most prized artisanal vinegars Canada, production runs are limited, but you can find them at the Okanagan Valley farm itself).
You can also talk to the pair about the forthcoming 2010 Winter Olympic Games. Both John Gordon and Kim Stansfield are avid cross-country skiers and they accredited to officiate the sport during the Games: as just two of the thousands of volunteers behind the scenes, they will spend almost a month at the venue, time keeping for cross-country events at Whistler Olympic Park in the Callaghan Valley, www.destination2010.ca.
