Aardman to devise movie for 2010 Olympics
Wallace and Gromit’s company plans a kids’ movie for the 2012 London Olympics
London-based The Tate, formerly the Tate Gallery, has signed with animation giant Aardman Animation, founders, inter alia, of Wallace and Gromit, to produce a kids’ movie in time for the 2012 London Olympics.

Tate will use artworks from its collections to inspire the five- to 11-year olds who will help produce the film, from the hand-drawn characters and plot twists through to costumes and comic sound effects. There will be kids’ production workshops, and youngsters can also contribute via an interactive website. Independent charity Legacy UK has donated £3 million to the production.

Tate Director Sir Nicholas Serota, who says the project is uniquely ambitious, will see kids drawing on their imaginations, lives and communities whilst developing their visual literacy, thus inspiring artists of the future.

Tate runs four art galleries in the UK. Tate Britain and Tate Modern are both in London, and there are also Tate Liverpool and Tate St Ives. Aardman Animation, based in Bristol UK, was founded by Peter Lord and David Sproxton, who had began their animating partnership at school (they used the name of a cel-animated superhero in their Vision On movie – it is generally translated from the Dutch as ‘goblin’).
They registered the name in 1972, and they were joined in 1985 by Nick Park, whom they had met at the National Film and Television School. They have received seven Oscar nominations, and four actual Oscars.

Aardman Animation is also working closely today with Nintendo: in addition, it makes about 75 commercials a year, for such clients as Chevron, Kelloggs, Leonard Cheshire Disability and McVities. In 2003 it established WEallace & Gromit’s Children’s Foundation, to support the quality of life for kids and their families in hospitals and hospices throughout the UK.
