Alpine traditions and contemporary modernism find harmony in the Grand Hotel Zermatterhof. Steeped in mountain lore, the hotel is nestled in an alpine village on the flank of the Matterhorn.
EXPERIENCE
As tempting as it may be to imagine yourself climbing the Matterhorn as you sip Dubonnet and kirsh by the fire at the Rundenbar, it's probably best to leave the mountaineering to the experts. Besides, there are over 313km of alpine ski runs at your disposal not to mention an abundance of hiking trails and a hotel casino should the mountains fail to exhaust your vigor.
The wind sheltered, south-facing location of Zermatt protects the hotel even as winter winds whip snow off the distant peaks.
The hotel's 84 rooms were refreshed in 2002 with a more modern aesthetic and contemporary amenities without sacrificing the original alpine character.
Those who find themselves planning a weekend adventure in the mountains will benefit from the Prato Borni restaurant's Buffet Royal, offered every Friday during the winter. And, if the snow clouds obscure the starry night sky, steal away to the delightfully illuminated Stars Bar for an aperitif and live music.
The Grand Hotel Zermatterhof is in the heart of Zermatt at an elevation of 5500 feet in southern Switzerland. By rail it is about four hours from Geneva-Cointrin and three hours from Zurich-Kloten and Milan-Malpensa. It is about three hours drive from both Milan and Geneva International Airports. Cars are not permitted in Zermatt but parking is available in nearby Täsch.
