Halfway down the Costa Blanca, Alicante houses cathedrals, castles, a beautiful basilica, and Hospes Amerigo. At home in one of Spain's oldest cities, this modern hotel was once a convent.
EXPERIENCE
A boutique hotel in the Spanish city of Alicante, Hospes Amerigo is a former Dominican convent. Though it's been through several incarnations, Hospes has maintained the convent's peaceful, almost spiritual setting by retaining much of the original architecture.
The hotel's modernist interior uses plenty of white space, dark wood accents, and welcoming furniture. The original stone walls and arched windows add a solemn air to the minimalist design. Avant-garde rooms include neutral wood furniture juxtaposed with striking abstract art, lit by floor-to-ceiling windows.
Some of the Hospes Amerigo's most interesting features are located not inside, but on the roof. An outdoor pool, terrace lounge, and full-service spa are all up there - and so is a spectacular view of the Castle of Santa Barbara.
Other highlights include traditional cuisine served in the modern Senzone restaurant, and delectable Spanish small plates in the Japanese-inspired tapas bar.
Hospes Amerigo is in the historical center of Alicante - a five-minute walk from Postiguest Beach, Town Hall, and the Double Cathedral of San Nicolás. Alicante's airport is a popular stop-over for many European flights, so you won't have a problem flying in. Once there, the hotel is a 20-minute taxi ride from the airport.
