EXPERIENCE

Iori’s machiyas have all the architectural characteristics of a traditional Kyoto townhouse including open entrances with complex beam-work, tatami-matted rooms, tokonoma alcoves, plaster walls and courtyard gardens. The machiyas are decorated with screens, hanging scrolls, andon floor lamps, tansu chests and nabeshima rugs to create a unique atmosphere.

Unlike staying in a ryokan where guests just have the use of their own room, at Iori the whole machiya is available, central rooms with tokonoma and view of the gardens. Although only tea and coffee making facilities and fridge are available in the kitchen, there are many restaurants of different cuisines for available around every machiya house for guests to experience. The machiya are actual houses, built for common citizens to live in. The Iori machiyas give an insight into what it was really like to live in the city.

There are many restaurants in Shijo, Sanjo, Teramachi, Kiyamachi, Gion, and Pontocho, which are all located within walking distance or a short taxi ride from Iori. You will find traditional restaurants serving elegantly presented Japanese dinners and hole-in-the-wall restaurants serving noodles. Kyoto also offers a good number of fine ethnic Asian restaurants, including Nepalese, Indian, Korean, and Thai food.

LOCATION

Iori’s machiyas are all located in the middle of downtown Kyoto. Kyoto is famous not only for its temples and shrines, but also for its traditional handicrafts and arts. Experience some of the arts first hand in a program at ORIGIN, which offers classes in Tea Ceremony, Shimai - Noh Drama dance, Calligraphy and Martial Arts.
