Like a sun-bleached watchtower, Masseria San Domenico stands tall above surrounding Brindisi olive groves. In fact, the building used to be exactly that, a watchtower for the Knights of Malta.
EXPERIENCE
Overlooking the Adriatic Sea, on the southern coast of Italy, is a handsome, whitewashed antique of a building. With a startling heritage dating back to the 1400s, when it served as a watchtower for the Knights of Malta, it is now the luxury boutique hotel Masseria San Domenico.
Needless to say, it has undergone a renovation or two since it was built almost 600 years ago. The lovely indoor and outdoor pools are new, as is the adjacent 18-hole golf course. The opulent period furniture in each of the 48 rooms and suites is also a few levels of luxury above what the knights must have made do with back in the day.
Diners at the restaurant at Masseria San Domenico can enjoy some of that history, though. The dining room dates back to the 1700s, while the cuisine is traditional to the region of Puglia, and relies heavily on produce, olive oil, and fruit grown on the hotel's own land.
