Traditionally, sailors crossing the equator for the first time were subject to hazardous initiation rites, including getting cast overboard and dragged beside their ship. No such obligation exists for today's tourists, but even if it did, the chance to visit Shangri-La's Villingili Resort and Spa would make any hardship well worthwhile. Though the word paradise gets overused, at Villingili, no description is more fitting.
For starters, Villingili occupies its own island. Four miles of picturesque coastline and over a mile of pristine beaches surround lush vegetation, natural lagoons, and nature trails. Accommodation is all-villa, with private ocean retreats and tree house villas commanding superb views.
For activities, visitors are truly spoiled. The Maldives' turquoise waters offer spectacular opportunities for diving and snorkeling among rays, sailfish, and turtles. Guests can even take a cruise to the equator - only with lunch provided rather than hazing. Ah, progress!
